Some memories there,CT. The Chelsea forward line was a good one with Brabrook and Tambling supporting the deadly Jimmy Greaves. The report makes reference to us 'tiring' in the second half and I think that pretty much reflects what happened to us as a whole. A massive week where sadly we conceded a total of 11 goals.

That's our record season for games played - it was one more than 2008/09 with the Charity Shield, new League Cup, FA Cup & European Cup on top of the league games.

I was 14 at the time and remember that the fine we received seemed enormous, particularly when you think of the price of admission in those days.
Mind you, they were great times to be a Claret with us finishing no lower than 7th in 8 consecutive seasons and being Champions in the middle of that run.

Too soon for me,CT but I was on the BBC news when Tommy Doc repaid us by playing his reserves at ours. 6-2, if I remember correct.
I used to go out with Bobby Tamblings niece, Carol. Her dad was a squaddie at Catterick.

That was about four years later. Doc had sent some players home for breaking a curfew although probably only half of the team.

Re: the fine - as Ashington says it would have been a huge amount in 1961 and for those who don't know about guineas, one was equivalent to a pound and a shilling so the total fine was £1,050.

That fine would equate to about £23,000 these days which, in the grand scale of money in football at our present level, is peanuts.

Tambling held the Chelsea goalscoring record for years until it was broken by Frank Lampard.

Tambling"s ability to score goals in a not always good Chelsea team was exceptional and today would have guaranteed him regular international call-ups. He played for England 3 times.

£21,837.19 in today's money to be exact, and it would have been well worth the fine if the cup runs had continued, which unfortunately they didn't.
