Burnley 0 : 1 Wimbledon FA Cup 3rd Round 1975

Post by Stan Tastic » Wed Feb 15, 2017 12:47 pm

A warning from history as we played our strongest team that day against a non-league side.

Wimbledon stayed in the Keirby Hotel the night before and me and a few mates wandered in for a bit of banter, after spotting them as we walked past.

Obviously I informed them they were in for a severe thrashing, but it was all good-natured stuff and how I laughed when one of them actually predicted a Wimbledon victory.
The romance of the FA Cup may be a well-worn cliche, but there are few teams with a greater claim to the phrase than Wimbledon.

Famous winners of the trophy in 1988, the ‘Crazy Gang’ epitomised all that is good about the grand old tournament.

But, as the third round rolls around again this weekend, those with longer memories may well find themselves reminiscing the feted day when Wimbledon truly announced themselves on the British football stage.

The date was January, 1975 and the then Southern League Dons were drawn away to First Division heavyweights Burnley.

With the Clarets riding high in the top flight, and containing international players such as Leighton James, few gave Allen Batsford’s men a chance - the bookmakers even quoting Wimbledon as 10,000-1 to lift the cup.

But someone forgot to tell the Dons, as goalkeeping hero Dickie Guy remembers.

“The thing was we really did not fear playing anybody”, he recalls “Allen had built up lots and lots of confidence in the squad and we went up there in high spirits.”

But Guy admits that the pre-match confidence was wobbled when the teams ran out.

He adds: “We were used to playing in front of 3-4,000 at Wimbledon, and that was on a good day.

“So when we ran out and there was 20,000 or so there it felt like we were playing at Wembley.

“But, to be honest, as soon as the game kicked off we realised that it was still only 11 men against 11.”

Burnley began strongly, and Guy had to be on top form as the favourites looked to kill off the minnows.

But, as the game went on, the Dons resolve grew, and when skipper Ian Cooke broke clear in the 49th minute, history beckoned.

Guy continues: “I remember Cooke having a shot which the keeper parried, and Mickey Mahon was there to score the rebound.

“It was incredible really.

“It was real backs to the wall stuff for pretty much the whole game - I was a lot busier in that match than when we played Leeds in Round Four.”

But Wimbledon held on, and the Dons celebrations were made even greater when the players found out, whilst in the Turf Moor baths, that they had drawn the mighty Leeds United, managed by Jimmy Armfield.

That was the famous occasion when Guy forever etched his name in FA Cup history, saving a Peter Lorimer penalty as the Dons earned a miraculous 0-0 draw at Elland Road, before narrowly losing a Selhurst Park replay.

But Guy reveals that the Burnley barnstormer has a bittersweet end.

He adds: “It is amazing that over 30 years on people still want to talk to me about it.

“But the sad thing is, no footage of the game has ever been shown.

“Bob Lord (Burnley chairman) felt there was too much football being shown on television, so refused to allow cameras in.

“But we found out recently a camera was there, and we are trying desperately to track down the film.”

After this result for years we had to put up with "wombles of wimbledon' songs sung by opposing fans wherever we played.
Funnily enough I then started watching quite a lot of Wimbledon home games as I lived nearby and you could always get in when they were in the Div 1 days and Premier League, crazy gang.

Also became (still am) a shareholder of AFC Wimbledon because I felt what happened to them (Franchise was an injustice)

Anyway lets hope we can beat Lincoln on Saturday and avoid the torment we will get if we lose.

Lord was probably right if we're honest, but looking back now it's such a shame that a great chunk of our past, particularly when we had such a good side, hasn't been captured on film. It's perhaps why when the media talk and show past games that Burnley are always omitted, and yet we achieved so much.

For the older fans who were there they have their memories, but for fans not old enough they are missing out.

I was there, My that was a bitter pill to swallow.
All my Leeds supporting friends couldn't stop laughing that was of course until they played Wimbledon in the next round.
By the way we didn't field a weakened team that day either.

They must have been in the baths an awfully long time as the draw wasn't done until Monday lunchtime.

Playing weaker teams in FA Cup games was something which was never done. If anything the manager might rest one or two players in the league game before the cup tie.

The FA Cup games were always given top priority and normally attracted larger crowds than league games.

I'll never forget my Physics teacher at BGS gloating for days.....hated him for that.........he has been banished from my memory and I can't remember his name now.

Someone on this thread will no doubt remember.

We finished 10th out of 22 teams in the top flight that season, only 8 points from the top.

It was the season after when the wheels fell off.

A very disappointing day that, started watching them in 59 and thought success would go on for ever. Wimbledon defeat depressed me for ages but compared to later events we were in clover then.

Probably Canvey Island on the Turf. Must be at least 10 years ago

Not convinced with Flanagan either.
Hoping we take this game ultra seriously.
Good, strong side that, as far as possible, takes an upset out of the mix.

Goodness i was in shock at the end of the game , we did everything but score .
One thing i always recall is a couple of fans ran onto the pitch at full time one lad fell out over the Bob Lord stand wall poor lad looked in real pain in the way he landed . Funny how you remember certain things and not others .

Didn't seem to affect us too much when you see where we were around a month later.

Yes. They were in Division 2. Hard to believe for anyone brought up on football since the dawn of the Premier League.

Not to mention a couple of absences from our local 'friends'.

Our success here was after we had sold Martin Dobson and Geoff Nulty.

I was there and... I was expecting us to go one better than the season before
and get to Wembley. The team might have recovered but I didn't.
I don't go to any games now with expectations, I just want us to show up.
Mind we did show up against Wimbledon, we just couldn't get it past their keeper,
who's name still haunts me.
Is it just me or can anyone remember us being top around Christmas time
during this 'team of the seventies' period?

I don't think today against Lincoln was as bad as this result because you could argue that we only played 5 regulars, whereas in 1975 we played our strongest team.

Looking at the side we put out today Lincoln have beaten the equivalent of a Championship team.

Yeah, we were a more established top flight side at the time, so the Wimbledon game probably shades it, but today was bad. It's not like we battered them for 90 minutes and they nicked it, fair enough, they didn't give Heaton anything to do, but they fought well all over the pitch.
