Dawlish Town
Saw a mention on another post that we once played Dawlish Town. Must have been in the FA Cup. (Tony would know this.) Dawlish Town no longer exists, having been wound up due to unpaid bills to their beer supplier. There is a lesson in this to all of us.

Re: Dawlish Town
Didn't we play them in a pre-season game one year?

Re: Dawlish Town
If so, there must have been some kind of connection. What was it?

Tony, you know all of these things. Please enlighten us.
Re: Dawlish Town
Played Dawlish Town and Tiverton I think in Stan's first preseason, I think we beat Dawlish 4-1 or something, seem to remember the first programme of the season vs Bristol City had a pic of super Glen at Dawlish.

Re: Dawlish Town
So, Stan was originally from the south-west? Doesn't seem the type.

Re: Dawlish Town
Maybe playing Dawlish was a way to help with their financial troubles. Maybe Glen even suggested it, if he had played for them. Tiverton were a much more established club, and didn't really need the help.
Re: Dawlish Town
When Stan took over there was no pre-season planned or what ever was planned Stan didn't like so did what he did with his bury team and went on the commando training thing in Devon and played Tiverton and Dawlish while we were there

Did Glen look dashing in green and yellow?

Re: Dawlish Town
Thanks, Taffy. That more or less explains it.
Re: Dawlish Town
Glen didn't play for Dawlish, he was pictured playing against Dawlish in the friendly and it was the subject of the front cover of Burnley's first match Programme of the season.ontario claret wrote:Did Glen look dashing in green and yellow?

Re: Dawlish Town
I was at the game, we were shocking!
Read Stan's book, the bit about waiting up in the hotel foyer, I think it's the Langstone Cliff in Dawlish Warren

Re: Dawlish Town
The other game in Devon in 1998 was actually at Elmore, the second club in Tiverton. I believe some Burnley fans went to Elmore in Gloucestershire.
We won 4-1 at Elmore but we're given the run around by a young Adam Stansfield who went on to play for Exeter City, but died tragically young of cancer. I said to Stan after the game that the defence looked a bit dodgy. 'They weren't dodgy, they were crap' was his brief response!

Re: Dawlish Town
Henderson and Smith played quite well if my memory serves me, which it usually doesn't, but generally we looked cumbersome, mind you we've looked like that in a few pre-season fixtures such as Bath under EH when one or two looked under the weather.
Re: Dawlish Town
18th July 1988, we won 4-0 with goals from Andy Payton (pen), Andy Cooke, Colin Carr-Lawton and Paul Smith.
If I remember the story rightly Dawlish were a bit cheeky, they entered their "club house" team in the Pub FA Cup which they won. Then they sent letters to a load of league teams asking if they fancied a friendly and as we had no pre-season organised we took them up on the offer.

Re: Dawlish Town
My only recolections of the game were Ternent getting grief from a few sillies behind the dug outs... and talking of beer it was very reasonable quality (real ale) and price in their club

Re: Dawlish Town
Can anybody tell me what Elmore's club colours are? They once made it into the Western League Prem, but are near the bottom of the First Division these days. At least they haven't been wound up for overdue bar bills yet.

Watch out for that washed-out railway line, however.
