Who can forget James Leighton ?

Post by randomclaret2 » Thu Feb 16, 2017 11:05 pm

Fascinating article on the Daily Express website with our former legend James Leighton reminiscing about the Orient game.

I had to look for it to believe it.

Good old Taffy reckons there must have been 30,000 on, I think he's remembering the Turf from his first spell. :D

Spot on 45 minutes when he blew. And our game was the most significant of the weekend, because every other championship, promotion and relegation had been settled, so we'd expect a top ref.

Wasn't it more like 25 minutes left when Orient scored? I'm sure it was before Lincoln finished.

They've confused him with Reece Leighton, that fat Welsh dart player.

35, according to Clarets Chronicles.

Their goal came in the 56th minute.

Great action photo of the Welsh Wizard - and look at Frank Casper, hands on hips like "Let Taffy rip em apart, I'll take a breather"

SuperTaff persuading the ref to blow up early, what a hero.

Amazing really that Orient had the nerve to score.

On April the 18th it will be 50 yrs since I stood on the terrace, which I later found out was called the "Longside." I wasn't at that time a Burnley supporter, having moved from the Oldham area,on marriage,to Bacup.I went on with a salesman & his girlfriend to watch Burnley take on Eintracht Frankfurt(I was working in Burnley,at NCR on Sandygate.)
I next went on the last match of that season & saw Dave Tnomas make his debut at 16 yrs. From then on I was "hooked."
In all the time that has elapsed the finest player to my mind is/was Leighton James.
He had it all,as they often said of George Best.

Maybe the 'journalist' confused him with Orient Leighton.

Didn't LJ live in a house on Burnley road opposite the George IV which he named captains cottage?
