I remember that penalty miss like it was yesterday.
Just glad I had to miss the replay.

"55 years and only four times have we reached the last 16 of the competition. On Saturday we will be looking to make that five"
You might want to change that to the last 8.
19 years of starting off in round one didn't help.

Just what was Stan thinking not playing Blake and Little at Watford?

Both coming back from injuries.summitclaret wrote:Just what was Stan thinking not playing Blake and Little at Watford?
The Watford game still sticks in the throat though, we just didn't turn up.

Glad you remembered the masks I organised, Tony...they showed some kids on the end credits of the MOTD...replay wearing them. Happy days!

It was Davis coming back from injury, not Blake & Little. Davis had been out for weeks but got part of a reserve game in the midweek before. He brought him on as a sub and he was responsible for the opening goal.Bin Ont Turf wrote:Both coming back from injuries.

Re: ARTICLE: Fifth round wins are hard to find
The penalty miss V Wedensday was awful and Taylor in fairness was a good player and a good finisher. I remember being on against Villa when Fletcher scored a very early goal which proved to be the winner. The crowd was massive as Villa brought loads and there was no segregation then. You couldn't tell who was who inside or outside the ground. Watford was such an inexplicably rubbish performance by what was actually a very good Clarets side at the time.

I went on Talk Sport after the Watford game, genuinely angry at the performance and tactics. He played for a draw. I hope we get another QF appearance soon to help consign that memory to room 101!

Steve Taylor and Billy Hamilton were my heroes as a kid, nerves got the better of him on the day and it's a massive shame as he wasn't the most talented footballer but gave absolutely everything on the pitch for Burnley.Dark Cloud wrote:The penalty miss V Wedensday was awful and Taylor in fairness was a good player and a good finisher.

So the game prior to the Watford game where they both came on as sub, and the two games prior to that where they didn't feature at all, were all managerial choices after they'd both featured in virtually every game that season, were they?

Was that the same season we got done 6-5, 7-2, 7-4 etc.? "Very good" is a bit of a stretch. Could have done with being a bit more swashbuckling at Vicarage Road.Dark Cloud wrote:The penalty miss V Wedensday was awful and Taylor in fairness was a good player and a good finisher. Well I was trying think of some of the names in the side/squad around that time and with Blake, Davies, Little, Payton? and a few others it should have been a decent team.

Re: ARTICLE: Fifth round wins are hard to find
Everyone went there in expectation not hope. We had come off the back of three good seasons. Very good in fact. And had some great players going forwards. Our defence that year was a shambles. We had actually done OK After an awful start to the season and we felt like The Cup was something we had a chance with. Massive clamour for tickets, we didnt have any. My dad and my uncle gave theirs away to me and my brother. We didnt want to take them but they convinced us they would get sorted and they did! As per.whentheballmoves wrote:I went on Talk Sport after the Watford game, genuinely angry at the performance and tactics. He played for a draw. The lineup was worse than the performance. I just remember everyone being gutted. Especially after we had dumped Fulham out in style.
That was the beginning of the end for Stan, it was sad to see. It could of got much worse the next season and god knows where we would be now.
Worse was to come against Watford thats for sure!

Going forwards we were great. We scored almost 70 goals that year. Just a shame we let about 90 in!Dark Cloud wrote:Well I was trying think of some of the names in the side/squad around that time and with Blake, Davies, Little, Payton? and a few others it should have been a decent team.
Alternating Nik the Greek and Marlon wont have helped.

Re: ARTICLE: Fifth round wins are hard to find
They were. In the game prior to Watford which was Millwall away, they both came on as subs. Both were unused subs in the game before that at Stoke and prior to that both had been subs in the cup replay against Fulham with just Little coming on. Blake had also been an unused sub in the two games before those three (I think Glen might have been out injured for these two). Stan dropped Robbie for the cup tie against Fulham away and brought in Lee Briscoe in a change of formation. Robbie didn't get his place back until we were out of the cup.Bin Ont Turf wrote:So the game prior to the Watford game where they both came on as sub, and the two games prior to that where they didn't feature at all, were all managerial choices after they'd both featured in virtually every game that season, were they?

Re: ARTICLE: Fifth round wins are hard to find
Went to a q & a with Stan sometime after the Watford game and he was asked about it. He was genuinely gutted about it but explained bits of it re selection and basically thought on about midway through the 2nd half whilst we were playing crap we still had a good chance of a draw and then it went wrong. Can't recall much more as was slightly inebriated but what he said made sense and diffused the anger I'd felt about that performance.
I just need Brian to explain why he dropped eagles and Blake for bastards at home in 2010 and I'll be truely cleansed
