Away form in isolation
Away form in isolation
It's April. A.P.R.I.L. And we still haven't won away. Let's not beat around the bush here, it's been shambolic, pathetic even. A season of real question marks over Dyche's ability to set us up, and instill belief in a team to go away from home and win.
Yes, staying up is a fantastic achievement, but we are using our remarkable and very unusual home form to bury our head in the sands. This isn't a home form that we can rely on year after year. It's not consistent.
We are using our points tally and positioning as an excuse. This has to stop. We have face up to the fact we have not been good enough away from home, not even close. And I don't think we are doing that.
I couldn't be more proud to be a Burnley fan, and I salute the players, Dyche and the board for what we have achieved. But there needs to be a change in approach for next season.

Why would you ignore half of our games?

It really is looking like we will not win an away game this season. So why?
And I really do not have an answer.

Re: Away form in isolation
It's something I'd imagine we'll be looking to rectify next season. Better players might help.
It's pointless moaning about it now though, the season's nearly over and we've achieved our primary goal of safety. Today it was much more important to not lose the game, likewise against Hull and Sunderland. It would have been nice to have won one of those games, and we still may win a game away although it's looking increasingly unlikely. But in terms of the bigger picture we took a lot of points from our 'relegation rivals' which have contributed in two ways to our healthy league position.

Re: Away form in isolation
Because most of the other teams are better than us and have a home advantage. Also, because we have won so many games at home we have been in the luxurious position where a draw has been a perfectly good result away from home and risking a point for three to a relegation rival really hasn't been worth it.boatshed bill wrote:It really is looking like we will not win an away game this season. And if you ignore all the games Chelsea have won or drawn, they wouldn't have a point all season. Have they got to change their approach too?

Re: Away form in isolation
We've improved away as of late, as reflected in our points total. We would record an away win if it was necessary but 3 away draws (out of 4) against relegation candidates is solid enough given our league position.

If we'd drawn on Tuesday and win today would people feel any better?

it's a funny one (not in a laughing sense) that we played really well away at Spurs, Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool yet don't seem to carry that confidence into games where we should do better

To be fair, I would actually feel a bit better to get the away day monkey off our back. But ultimately I'm delighted with a point today.Tall Paul wrote:If we'd drawn on Tuesday and win today would people feel any better?

I thought we played with confidence today. The second half wasn't a bad performance. We just weren't clinical and that's been a theme away from home.Vegas Claret wrote:it's a funny one (not in a laughing sense) that we played really well away at Spurs, Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool yet don't seem to carry that confidence into games where we should do better

Re: Away form in isolation
yeah we had a patch where we played it on the deck and were much better, I don't disagree - it's probably the "freedom" Dyche often talks about - in the games where the expectancy is low we seem to play better

We have been unlucky a couple of times away from home and lucky a couple of times at home. It matters not. Relegation is based on the total of ALL points gained home and away.

Re: Away form in isolation
We haven't won away for the same reason hardly anyone has won at TM.
Some teams are just better set up at home then they are away, it can't really be explained and all the tantrums and tears from the usual suspects on here won't change it.
Yes things will change next season, especially the playing personnel, but I'd find it hilarious if our form switched next season and the points for survival came from away games instead of home.
Would make this place amusing to read.

Re: Away form in isolation
You're all missing a good point.
We can't be as unproductive away from home next season, therefore all those extra points will be a bonus.
Now I know there is no guarantee we will win 10 home games next season either, but improving on a poor away record should be easy. So if we can achieve what we have so far, without an away win, what a stormer next year could be.

Couldn't care less where the points come from. The league table after 84% of the season suggests that we're the 12th best team in England.

Re: Away form in isolation
41 times a top flight team has not won away from home,it isn't unique to us!
Re: Away form in isolation
The criticism is getting really tiresome.
I think there are 3 teams who have only one once away from home - including the champions.
Boro have managed to be unbeaten in half of their away games - look where that's got them.
Why would any burnley fan be really that bothered if we don't win away all season yet manage to stay up ?
Our home form is incredible - especially considering the calibre and size of teams in the Premier League.
We have one of the best sides - if not the best - many of us have had the pleasure of watching in 40 years.
We have improved away from home and put in some very good performances - Spurs have won their last 11 home games and we gave them a closer game than any other team. We should have drawn against Arsenal and have now had draws against Hull, Boro, and Sunderland conceding only 1 goal against these teams. These are teams who we had to make sure we did not lose against - and we didn't.
We won away games in both our previous Premier League seasons and still got relegated.
FFS - try and enjoy the season.....because if you can't enjoy this season then you never will

Re: Away form in isolation
This season doesnt matter now as long as we stay up which is 99% in the bag
Next year Dyche needs to show he can get a balance with hard working players alongside creative players in the side to try look like a 12th to 17th placed team rather than one just hopeful to survive
If Dyche can show he can spend 10-20m on a few quality players next season and improve our team without desperately worrying about the framework then he will become the next hot property with Howe and will prove the critics like me wrong
Otherwise he will just be the next Neil Warnock or Sam Allerdyce getting teams promoted from the Championship and avoiding relegation from the Prem as best he can

I don't think I can articulate just how little I care about not winning away. We're twelfth. One point off tenth. Best season Burnley have had in decades and decades. Get a grip.

Re: Away form in isolation
At this stage of the season it's all about making it to the finishing line. Just getting there, whatever it takes. Once we're playing Premier League football next season, the OP has a very valid point. Away form and the way we play football is surely our next challenge to overcome.

Ah, apologies, with you now. The analysis of our away form - I've found it so tedious it's untrue. Would've been nice to win away, sure. But hasn't mattered. It's been a fantastic season.Devils_Advocate wrote:Wasnt being the normal tw*t i am but your post was as succinct as any post who actually tried to articulate it

Re: Away form in isolation
38 games in a season in the Premier League, 19 Home and 19 Away and so far we have won 10 at Home 30 points, you seem to have missed that, but it is always easier to miss something out if it make your argument look better.
