Shay McCarten

Post by Woodleyclaret » Mon Apr 10, 2017 8:59 pm

Showing some good form this season .I always thought he would progress and Sean wanted him to sign but Shay wanted regular games.
Is he another Marc Pugh a late developer who is worth resigning?

No. He's a fourth division player. He isn't going to be a Premier League player just because he's been on a good run of free kicks.

Really? He had a contract offer withdrawn by Blake.

McCartan always had the free kick in his locker and his blinding pace.

Time will tell. I wish him well, especially as I've got a soft spot for Accrington, but I'd be surprised if he got much higher.

Tony...am I right in thinking McCartan was released in the summer when he would have otherwise signed as a Full Time pro , having completed his 2 years as a Trainee ? Why would Blake have the final say on who got a pro deal... ? Was he offered a deal only to have it withdrawn ?

Definitely offered a deal which was then withdrawn. His scholarship was from 2011 to 2012 and he had one further year with us in 2012/13. He was offered a new deal and then it was withdrawn after the end of the season. I've never got the full story on what happened. Why would Blake have a say? Because he was in charge of the academy which went up to u21 then, now up to u23. Shay was still a few days short of his 19th birthday.

Still only 22, his league record at Accy isn't bad - 48 starts, 57 on as a sub with 24 goals.

Cos Blake thought he was Billy Big ******** and could make those decisions. Truth is he was just an over rated furniture removals man.

Cheers Tony....I wasn't sure whether Howe or Dyche was manager when McCartan was released. It just seemed odd that a player who had been around the first team squad would be released by the U21 manager when presumably Dyche had been happy with him being offered a deal in the first place.

Whatever happened to Wes Fletcher? He used to bang them in for the youth team didn't he?

If we stay up I hope we sign better players than Shay McCarten.

The point I was making that he may be worth keeping an eye on.We have signed some absolute rubbish that we have paid serious money for and signing players for less with ability is surely worth considering.
I of course want a goal scorer, a midfielder who is a younger version of Joey and a decent pacy winger.Who doesn't ?
