Goalkeepers becoming managers?

Post by Quickenthetempo » Wed Apr 12, 2017 1:07 pm

My goalkeeping mad son (thanks Tom) has just asked the question of Do goalkeepers become managers and I can't think of many. Can you?

Peter Shilton and Mike Walker are the only two off the top of my head.

Dino Zoff and Walter Zenga would be the 2 obvious ones, but I think it would be correct to say that in percentage terms v few keepers have made the grade as managers.

The current Spain manager, Lopetegui, was a keeper.

He used to manage Porto, and Porto's current manager was a keeper.

It's worth bearing in mind that there are 10x more outfield players than goalkeepers.

That's true- but that would mean that on average there would be about 9 ex-keeper managers in the PL and EFL, and I don't think we've ever reache'd anywhere near that number.

Don Mackay was doing well at Blackburn, then Dalglish came and screwed it all up ?

Difficult to think of many recent examples - Peter Taylor (in partnership with Brian Clough). Willie McFaul at Newcastle. Tony Waiters.

No not yet, he is only 10 but over the last year he has become obsessed with football after not really showing an interest. Going on the turf and him playing fifa with his friends have been influential.

Having started last season with Walter Zenga as manager, Wolves have the afore-mentioned Nuno as their new manager. 2 goalkeeper managers in a year. What are the chances?
