Will we avoid the second season syndrome?
Will we avoid the second season syndrome?
You could say this is effectively our second consecutive season in the Prem under SD.
We've got many of the same players from two years ago, play the same system, have started to adapt and as a result, next year will really be our third year at this level using the same methods.

Should only be asking that question when we KNOW we're staying up.

Re: Will we avoid the second season syndrome?
I'm confused, are we currently avoiding second season syndrome, or is that next season?
Is there such a thing as 3rd season syndrome?

Re: Will we avoid the second season syndrome?
We cannot rest on our laurels, we will need to remove a large amount of sentiment from decisions around players in our first 11, and invest more money than we even have already in the last 12 months.
Every team will be investing heavily again, we need to do this just to stay afloat. I would expect us to sell Keane for a minimum of £30m, we will need a replacement for him, two players to put pressure on Lowton/Ward (despite them being outstanding - Flanagan will be gone and Darikwa is terrible), a centre forward to walk into our starting 11, a long term replacement for Barton and another winger.
It's a tough league this, constant progression has to be seen - we need to be as brave as we have in the market over the last year, and then some more.

Haven't we already got a replacement for Keane - Tarks? Not sure why you feel that pressure needs to be put on Lowton and Ward as they've been excellent this season, what more do you expect/want from them? Whilst Darikwa isn't great, there's no way he can be considered as terrible. A centre forward to walk in our team would probably cost £20million +.jedi_master wrote:. Re: Will we avoid the second season syndrome?
What is unavoidable is the 'Burnley syndrome'.
It used to happen just for approximately an hour an half on Saturday afternoons or Tuesday nights. It has since spread and sometimes occurs on Sunday afternoons, Monday nights or Wednesday nights as well.
The symptoms can be one if not all of anxiety, euphoria, mild to severe depression, tourette's and a unexplained warm feeling inside that there is no known cure for.

Re: Will we avoid the second season syndrome?
It won't be anything to do with a syndrome but with the fact that it will be hard to keep this side together and SD's signings generally take a long time to settle. Add to that the framework will be weaker. A lot will depend on whether Agyei or any other youngster can suddenly make a leap forward. If we lose Gray I fancy it will be a huge struggle.
Re: Will we avoid the second season syndrome?
Next season will definitely be a transitional one. It'll be a little bit like our promotion season again, we lost Shackell, Trippier and Ings. Not forgetting that Barton came in to replace the injured Marney too.
Next season could be very similar with Keane almost certain to leave, Barton facing the possibility of a career ending ban, Marney still out injured, Defour linked with a move to China and Gray, Boyd and Arfield linked with moves away.
Hopefully with a pre-season under their belts Brady and Westwood will have had enough time to understand the frame work.
There will definitely be challenges but I really think that Dyche will be pushing for a top ten finish and perhaps giving higher priority to the cups.

Re: Will we avoid the second season syndrome?
They only take time to settle if they're not here for pre-season and even that can be debatable sometimes as Barton didn't take massively long first time round, nor did Gray did he?ablueclaret wrote:It won't be anything to do with a syndrome but with the fact that it will be hard to keep this side together and SD's signings generally take a long time to settle. Why is a lot going to depend on a youngster taking a leap forward?
If it does then our recruitment/transfer policy in the summer has failed miserably in replacing outgoing players with experienced players.
Are you actually expecting someone like Agyei to become a first choice player?

A replacement for Boyd
A first choice striker and cover at centre half...
