O/T Car Insurance

Post by ClaretDiver » Tue Apr 18, 2017 7:37 am

Hey guys,

A bit of advice needed! Who do you guys use for your car insurance, I am looking for a reasonable quote for a small car. Having been out of the country for so long I have no 'no claims' bonus...

Suggestions??

Comparethemarket or go compare

If there is anyone you can add as a named driver that might bring it down without lying/fronting then try that.

Use a comparison website like http://www.comparethemarket.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Put your details in once and you'll have 50-60 quotes to choose from.

Don't take the first set of results though. Tweak your details etc (without lying) and see how low you can get it.

I imagine having no NCD will be a bit of an issue mind.

Good luck!

I might be being a bit thick here but how would adding a named driver bring insurance down??

I honestly don't know why, but my Insurance is cheaper if I add my partner to the policy. We both have maximum no claims and our own cars, but it is cheaper when I add her to my policy and also cheaper for her to add me to her policy. Needless to say she doesn't like driving my car but who cares about the why, when it is cheaper to do it that way!

Depends who you are adding. Ideally you want someone older, with more experience which means the insurer sees that a % of the time the car will be driven by someone h eh deem is less of a risk.

It can put it up if the other driver is less experienced than you.

As I said once you have your first set of quotes write down the cheapest and go and change one thing at a time (mileage, voluntary excess etc) to find the best possible price.

Don't be put off by having a black box fitted either.

Refuse to use go compare because of the more than irritating adverts. Premiums have been hike up this year due to false claims.

Have you bought the car yet? If not a newer car will often cost less to insure (depending in how new).

Also, make sure you go for comprehensive insurance not 3rd party, it's become cheaper.

No idea, but my nephew's first insurance quote for himself alone was about £2,000; it halved when he added his parents as named drivers. Even though they live a hundred miles away from him and the car, and have little intention of ever driving it. Putting them down as main drivers would be fraud, but putting them down as extras is perfectly legit.

As silly as it sounds i will go with L.C. on this one, and i questioned it at my Agents and told it was correct, not every Insurance Company provides this cover i believe, it is a baffler. And also a Dash Cam may help, but if you have a claim without your Dash Cam working beware.

After you have done the price comparison sites, try Direct Line and Aviva. Neither are on comparison sites. Then take a look at Topcashback. 3 or 4 years ago i ended up paying about 160 quid for 2 drivers, business use and protected NCD with Aviva and TCB.

Also try changing the excess. You can never say you won't crash but I do not intend on causing an accident so usually increase the excess which brings it down. Also your job title can reduce it

I do this (dont know if its all on my head though) use the comparison websites to find the best deal then go directly to that company's site. Obviously have to re-enter the details but should be even cheaper.
