Players running down contracts
In view of the upcoming mk transfer, how do we stop this, it's becoming the norm that players come to Burnley make a name for themselves and let their contract runs down and move on the cheap !!

Re: Players running down contracts
Maybe its a recruitment policy... Burnley are stepping stone to bigger things and maybe that how we attract the players in the first place? Its business and its a good thing. We are not selling club to survive and pay bills like we were 10 years ago, we invest in young players and invest it again from them moving on.alwaysaclaret wrote: it's becoming the norm that players come to Burnley make a name for themselves and let their contract runs down and move on the cheap !!

Re: Players running down contracts
Not just a Burnley thing, numerous players have done it over the years across football leagues, but it's down to Bosman and his court case all those years ago.

Re: Players running down contracts
We need to ensure that contracts contain extensions that are favourable to the club.
When we were paying up to 3m for a player, we generally got value from them on the pitch even if they ran their contact down, ings being a good example. Now we're paying 10m+, we do need to be a bit more savvy in our dealings.

Re: Players running down contracts
You can't stop it. Every club has a price, every player has a 'buy out'. It's up to the scruples of said player how they play that out. Keane knows we can hold out for a big fee, a very big fee. He isn't daft. He's gone about it the same way as Tripps. Except he has a year to go. He'll have a figure set at which clubs can trigger a bid, but we don't have to accept that.

Re: Players running down contracts
The obvious way to stop it is insert a clause in the contract that the club can put an extra year onto any contract it so desires. Getting a player to sign it is a whole different ball game though.
Offering longer contracts is a dangerous game as you could end up with a few players on decent contracts not playing and refusing to move on.

That's a very good c_u but I'd much rather they showed a bit of loyalty. And had a bit more no use when signing them.

Re: Players running down contracts
We need to cracking on and find a cheap striker then.

Why should a player show loyalty?! Unless they are a fan?!alwaysaclaret wrote:That's a very good c_u but I'd much rather they showed a bit of loyalty. And had a bit more no use when signing them.
Re: Players running down contracts
It's not exactly doing us any harm though, is it? As I type, we are sitting 14th place in the Premier League, four points outside the top ten.
Those nasty greedy players!

Because in this case at least it's Burnley that made him the player he is today, manu couldn't do it could they.ThinLizzy wrote:Why should a player show loyalty?! Unless they are a fan?!

They'd argue, and strongly do now. They shouldn't have let him go. He's a Man Utd fan. This will play on his mind.alwaysaclaret wrote:Because in this case at least it's Burnley that made him the player he is today, manu couldn't do it could they.

Re: Players running down contracts
So he's going on the cheap is he?
All players have potential. Some realise it and beyond, some don't and fade away. We had no way of knowing MK would become a first choice England centre half when we signed him, and anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves. Anyway, that's how he has developed, and because of that he has suitors. We will get somewhere between what we want for him, and what another club is willing to pay. If we are switched on during negotiations, will will include as many clauses as we can. If the buying club wants him that badly (as we did) they will agree and he will be sold. At a MASSIVE profit. That's just how it works.
MK's contract WONT run down. I'd bet an inch of me wotsit on that. Trust me when I tell you I can ill afford that loss.

Re: Players running down contracts
I suppose the big question is, can we bring tarks on to the same degree we've done with Keano and find another bargain to sit on the bench, possibly, but we also have to bear in mind that we need a bargain striker " that's football " and business of course, we wait in anticipation, come on you premier league clarets.

Re: Players running down contracts
I'm not sure where you get the 'becoming the norm' from - I can only think of Danny Ings in recent years. It's simple, if the player won't move and he won't sign a new deal then there is precious little the club can do. I'd say we've probably benefited more from it over the years than suffered.alwaysaclaret wrote:In view of the upcoming mk transfer, how do we stop this, it's becoming the norm that players come to Burnley make a name for themselves and let their contract runs down and move on the cheap !!

Re: Players running down contracts
Of course fans are quite happy if the club move somebody on who isn't very good and still under contract. No wishing he had signed for 6 years or we should be honouring his contract in that scenario.
Should we be offended by us signing players who are still contracted to other clubs ?

Re: Players running down contracts
All this is reminding me of gamblers who after they win lament that they didn't back more. What about rvds. Or any one of tens of signings that didn't pan out. We have a sensible conservative contract policy which means if we get a few wrong it isn't going to unduly affect us. Just look at the dross on big contracts down the road when they came down.

Re: Players running down contracts
You can't just stick clauses into contracts. A player and their legal team have to agree to it. I would suggest anything that would restrict the player's future ambitions and/or earnings would not be accepted.

Re: Players running down contracts
It's funny how people always complain about players 'running down' contracts and never about players 'honouring' contracts.

Re: Players running down contracts
What are you on about? He signed a contact and has honoured it. Maybe he should've shown loyalty to Manchester United and rotted in the reserves?alwaysaclaret wrote:That's a very good c_u but I'd much rather they showed a bit of loyalty. And had a bit more no use when signing them.
Re: Players running down contracts
I still think we should have held out for more when Ings signed for Liverpool, I'd have left him to rot in the reserves.
Re: Players running down contracts
Not sure we had any choice in the matter. In terms of asking for more money for Liverpool I thought we did - but it was irrelevant anyway because even if we would have asked for £20m Liverpool knew this was going to the tribunal to agree the final fee.Diesel wrote:I still think we should have held out for more when Ings signed for Liverpool, I'd have left him to rot in the reserves.
Re: Players running down contracts
I rather suspect he was just trying to provoke someone to explain the fee was set by the tribunal when he was fully aware of that himself

Re: Players running down contracts
At this time of the season every club has the same problem, contracts have and end. If Manure cannot find a way around it no chance of Burnley. As with every part of club we are improving, recruitment will be easier than previous years because of that progress. Will there be complaints of the system if Stephens joins for free?
Re: Players running down contracts
What about letting Trippier go for a poultry £3.5m?

Not to be confused with poultice farmers, like those down the road.
