How can any other party do Brexit?
That of course is the cynical thinking behind calling the election.
If May had been genuine about wanting the country to have the best deal she would have ensured that whoever was in power would have an opportunity to get their act together, that would have meant having an election immediately after her enthronement not waiting nigh on 9 months for the Tories to get their act together to pass Article 50.
Now given the time restraints no other Party if elected could hope to do a deal on the allotted timescale.
In effect she has potentially put this country at a distinct disadvantage from a negotiating stance, she is basically saying we have claimed the Brexit process and nobody else can do it.
Why the Labour Party aren't attacking her on this, I don't know. It appears only the Europeans see through her cynical manoeuvring. They at least understand the way in which the Tories operate.

Re: How can any other party do Brexit?
Why wasn't there an election last year?
There didn't appear to be a need for one, but due to continual opposition to Brexit and questions about her leadership, she possibly felt she had no option.
As for what Labour are doing, Corbyn clearly isn't completely stupid.
If he announced he wasn't going to honor the referendum he'd lose a lot of votes overnight pretty much.
You seem to be struggling with this one, which is a little surprising (or maybe not).
Any party claiming they're going to over turn the referendum result is starting off on a bad footing immediately.
If May wins and gets a decent majority then she can crack on with the job at hand and can dismiss the naysayers.

Re: How can any other party do Brexit?
That's not what I'm saying Sidney, But how could Labour or the Lib Dems if elected get the organisation in place to carry Brexit forward in the allotted time. Just think how long it has taken for the Tories to get their act together just to trigger Article 50.
Even the most biased amongst us, and I realise your deep blue credentials, must recognise May has triggered this election purely for Party political reasons.

Re: How can any other party do Brexit?
It took so long to trigger article 50 because everyone thought remain would win and nobody made any contingency plans.
She has done the right thing due to the Lords and Liberals fighting to use the courts and political processes to stall and defeat brexit.
She's definitely done the right thing. Maybe should have done it a few months ago, but that's all.

Deep blue credentials?
Maybe if Labour had put the other Miliband in charge instead of the daft wet one....
Labour have a shadow minister for Brexit, negotiations haven't started yet, shouldn't be to difficult to get up to speed.
If they can't then all it would do is show how useless they really are.
No point talking about other parties, its going to be a straight fight between Labour and Tories like it usually is.
Personally I'd like a cross party committee to deal with it, but that means they wouldn't be able to play political football with it.

I wonder if that's true? Nearly half voted to remain so if they do not respect the referendum result they might see things differently.

Re: How can any other party do Brexit?
Half of those who turned out did yes, but no one knows how many of those who voted remain are also Labour voters.
Re: How can any other party do Brexit?
I think the answer to this is straightforward. If Labour lead the negotiations then we'll see a brexit in which current EU laws protecting the environment and workers rights would be maintained or bolstered. Probably many of the land subsidies paid to large landowners in the UK would be reconsidered. And the rights of existing EU citizens within the UK would be guaranteed (probably in tandem with those of British citizens living in EU countries). If the Tories lead the negotiations I can imagine an opposite scenario to the above.

Re: How can any other party do Brexit?
All current EU laws are to be enshrined into UK law, Tories have already said that.
Re: How can any other party do Brexit?
More than a few Tory MPs have called for cuts to workers' rights. Let's see if they make any commitments to maintaining them in their manifesto.

Re: How can any other party do Brexit?
Hi ablue, there's not been any ban on any of the other political parties developing their own plans for brexit negotiations, in fact there's never been a ban on any political party planning for an occasion when they might become the government. In the past, changes from Conservative government to Labour government, or the reverse, haven't been stopped by a complaint by the incoming party that "we aren't ready for power" - rather the opposite.ablueclaret wrote:That of course is the cynical thinking behind calling the election.

There's a tradition that the opposition meets with senior civil service to discuss their plans in the run up to a general election. I've seen reports tht Labour have held their meeting with civil service. Reports are that it was a "quiet" meeting, Jeremy Corbyn's team hadn't got a lot prepared. There were also reports from Sept/Oct last year that Labour party had been put on "general election alert" and were already preparing in the event that TM did call a GE. Obviously, there appears to be disconnection between the two reports: unless by preparing for a GE all JC's team meant is let's print some new banners.
For balance, let's consider the other parties (even though none if large enough to form a government):
Lib-Dems - want a second referendum, don't want to leave EU - so, they don't need to plan for brexit negotiations;
SNP - copy and paste from above;
UKIP - want to leave EU - don't care about negotiations.

Re: How can any other party do Brexit?
They possibly have, but they're all being put into UK law first and foremost, along with everything else we've had from the EU.AndrewJB wrote:More than a few Tory MPs have called for cuts to workers' rights. Let's see if they make any commitments to maintaining them in their manifesto.
Then parliament /government can sift through them and work out what to keep and what to get rid of.
Now I'm assuming any changes to workers rights that are part of UK Law would need to be debated in parliament?

There needs to be some review and a balance needs to be found.AndrewJB wrote:More than a few Tory MPs have called for cuts to workers' rights. Let's see if they make any commitments to maintaining them in their manifesto.
Re: How can any other party do Brexit?
When they passed the 'Great Repeal Bill' it came with provisions allowing ministers to make changes to the laws without reference to parliament. This is what many called May's 'Henry VIII' powers. David Davis promised that these powers would only be used for cosmetic purposes. We shall see. But there are other parties out there who we can better trust with workers rights and the environment.Sidney1st wrote:They possibly have, but they're all being put into UK law first and foremost, along with everything else we've had from the EU.

Re: How can any other party do Brexit?
There probably is, but I'd also trust Labour to make as big a mess as people thing the Tories will make.
Neither party is much cop for plenty of people, its about picking the best of a bad bunch really and there isn't always much in it.
