When was goals scored used rather than goal difference?

Post by ClaretTony » Sun Apr 23, 2017 10:21 am

I know that goal average was replaced by goal difference in 1976 to determine which teams finished higher if equal on points, but we then, some years later, switched to goals scored but does anyone know when and for how long?

Think it was the late 80s, CT. Could be wrong though.
But didn't Arsenal win the league, beating Liverpool on goals scored?

They did, but only because the goal difference was equal

But is it goal difference now because on goals scored we are behind Swansea and Hull?

Think only because both teams had same goal difference

I think it was only for 2-3 years the league did it but for the life of me I can't find it no matter what I google.

It's still goal difference isn't it? Goals scored is only used if it's the same.

Isn't it;
Points
If equal points then goal difference
If equal points & goal difference then goals scored

Rammy quicker than me

It is now but there was a period when the league switched to goals scored rather than goal difference and I'm trying to find out when.

Wigan Athletic were awarded the championship on most goals scored, which was the first tie breaker in use in the Football League between 1992 and 1999, although Fulham had the greater goal difference. It reverted to the Goal Difference method from the start of the 1999–2000 season.

That was for the third division at the time

Brilliant, thanks Cleveleys_claret - didn't realise it was used for seven years though. I can safely carry on with what I was doing now.
