Why start a new thread about anything at all then? Let's just have one long 'Burnley' thread and it can all go in there eh?
This is important information, to the extent that ClaretTony has written an article and posted another thread on that basis.

Joey Barton also played THE Critical role in dragging us back into the automatic picture and end the season unbeaten in the calendar year and champions.
I don't care if he bet on every single one of them! His gambling problem ddnt affect his performance for us. A great player for us especially in his first spell and one we were priveleged to watch. Will never forget his time with us - for all the right reasons!

Re: Barton made 253 football bets as a Burnley FC player
Hi UpTheBeehole, what were the bets? How many winners did Joey have? Did any involve Burnley, I expect not, otherwise this would have been highlighted in media reports, only ManCity and Newcastle. Did he bet on any other Championship games last season?UpTheBeehole wrote:The FA report states that Joey made 253 bets while a Burnley player, with stakes totalling £43,395.90.
I'll miss Joey playing at Palace.

What would HMRC do with them?FCBurnley wrote:Hope all you gamblers out there will avoid Betfair like the plague.................unless of course you want your account details sending to HMRC

Gambling is tax free, so unless you're betting with stolen or untaxed money, HMRC wouldn't be interested.FCBurnley wrote:Hope all you gamblers out there will avoid Betfair like the plague.................unless of course you want your account details sending to HMRC

That averages around £172 a bet.UpTheBeehole wrote:The FA report states that Joey made 253 bets while a Burnley player, with stakes totalling £43,395.90.
That statement doesn't say what the bets were on. It's quite possible these bets were legal as far as his employment at Burnley is concerned.
I have some sympathy with Barton. Whilst I understand the reason for the rules he has fallen foul of, it would be interesting to know the scale of the betting other top footballers carry out even if it is legal.
As Barton said in his response to the ban, there is an element of hypocrisy about the FA allowing clubs and leagues to accept vast sums from the betting industry, both directly and through adverts, and the treatment of the likes of Barton. Whilst these footballers are adults who should be able to make the correct choices, clearly that is not always the case.
As for the betting firm 'snitching' on Barton, I suspect their terms of operating with the FA will include some obligation to report on these matters.

Yeah but i bet it wasnt after his first bet.
Ronny the rep: "Joey B has just placed his first bet with us for £170"
BetBill the boss: "shhhhh dont tell the FA until he's given us 30k, he's shoite at gambling"

It does say that they were all contrary to the FA rules.Hipper wrote:That averages around £172 a bet.

There's no element of hypocrisy from the FA. The rules aren't because they are are against gambling, they are to protect the integrity of the game.I have some sympathy with Barton. Its probably more likely the FA and betting firms know that some throwaway gambling goes on by footballers and they are not to concerned about trying to fully police it and catch and ban everyone involved.WestMidsClaret wrote:"As for the betting firm 'snitching' on Barton, I suspect their terms of operating with the FA will include some obligation to report on these matters."

What they have done is put a simple black and white rule in place with a severe punishment so in the situation that they pretty much know someone is involved in match fixing type gambling activity the burden of proof is not on the FA to show they were specifically fixing matches and just the fact they have been gambling on football matches they can dish out a severe punishment
This is a strong message they will not tolerate the integrity of the game being risked and close any loopholes clever highly paid lawyers can look to get round.
Unfortunately for Joey he is a bit of an attenion seeking gobsh*te on social media and had flaunted breaking these rule to all and sundry leading to someone bringing it to the FAs attention. Once brought to the FAs attention they have to act and they have to act strongly as if they gave him a weak punishment based on he was not up to any wrongdoing then this would again set the precedent of proving the specific wrongdoing and put that burden of proof on the FA playing into the hands of the crooks.
If Barton would have been discreet im sure noone in the FA or betting world would have even noticed his betting just like they dont with all the other footballers who like a fun gamble on the footy and if anything it is Bartons arrogance in being so wreckless in his openess around this that is now going to put the spotlight on a lot of his fellow pros....what a guy.
