Last time I heard the word mugwump it was on an early 70s TV show called Catweazle about a crusty old guy who was several hundred years behind the times and struggling to cope with modern society.

Personally had no idea it was a word, until May's own foreign Secertary used it in his newspaper article.

Nice to see they read each other's work ;-)

A mugwump originally was a republican who supported Grover Cleveland (Democrat) ahead of the Republican candidate Blaine in (I think) 1848, in protest against Blaine's corruption. So if Blair is saying vote against the Labour party to stop the Conservatives getting in, he isn't really a mugwump; if he said vote against Labour because Corbyn is wrong, then he would be a mugwump.

Its the "vote Leave, take back control" mantra, say it enough times and people will be saying it in their sleep, and when they put a cross in the tory box when they vote. Worked for brexit.

When I hear Coalition of Chaos I think of the Tory/Lib Dem debacle before the last General Election - is that what she is referring to...?

'The Mugwumps' was the original name used by the 'Mamas and Papas' prior to them becoming famous. Reference to it is made in one of their hits, 'Creeque Alley'.

I found the definition online the other day...

Mugwump: A stupid insult only ever used by a ridiculous Tory w4nker.

I can't help but imagine just how much of an outrage would have been present if that same "insult" had instead been used on Saqid Khan.
