Are the stats correct regarding Heaton?

Post by Spijed » Wed May 03, 2017 3:10 pm

They always seem to have him down as one of the busiest keepers in the Premier league yet in many games, like Palace for example, he had little to do.

Is it just a case of one or two matches skewing the figures, like Man U. away, for example?

Our technique of funnelling attacks into a narrow corridor as wide as the 'd' of our area means that, if opponents even get a shot away, it's right down Heaton's throat. He therefore mops up many of these speculative efforts in a usual match, making him statistically 'busy'.

The number of shots a 'keeper has to save aren't always the same as them being good chances to score.

Heaton's world class save against Ibrahimovic gets the same implacable mark in the stats as a tame shot rolling straight into his arms.

I suspect the stats are correct. They dont tell the whole picture though.

Stats dot tell the whole picture. For example, Burnley's goal attempts are normally very low, but stats don't consider attacking crosses. Sam Vokes not connecting with a cross is just as threatening as shot on goal in our case.

If the stats tell us Heaton is the best English keeper in the league, then yes, they are correct.

If they tell us he isn't, then no, they are wrong.

The Liverpool home game was a perfect example. I think they had about 20 shots on goal, but at the game, I never felt they would score, mainly due to them being from distance or speculative.

3 of palaces chances on Saturday were easy for Heaton due to his excellent positioning. The only real chance was the one from milivojevic which he blasted wide

He saves it for fun. If the shots are a bit low, the back four have a few!
