Vokes the perfect target man

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Sat May 06, 2017 6:24 pm

Played excellent today and not just for his goals. Perfect performance from him and deserved a hat trick.

Really pleased for him. Key player for us and we always score more with him in the side. Weighs in with important goals whilst creating space for his partner.

I would kike to see us bring another big man in as we can always improve but Sam proved his worth again today.

With JBG and Brady featuring more he will score more. And credit Brady for another assist.

Another big man like...Llorente? :)

Edit - Just to add...I think Llorente is class.

Yeah absolutely. Llorente is next level. Although a bit less mobile.

Super performance from big Sam. Looking very sharp at the moment.

Played well today, no doubt. Scored two but as is usual for UTC, he's now a world beater.

Lets be realistic, the games he has like today are few and far between. He doesn't play well every week, he doesn't score every week and sometimes he looks so slow, cumbersome and uninterested it's amazing he gets another run out. His lack of pace is a problem at this level, and that means he won't score too many. Not enough for a mid table PL side, which is what we should be targeting for our future. To be fair to him though, we hardly get wide and play the type of ball he would thrive on.

Today we secured PL football for another year, and that is absolutely superb. I'm absolutely delighted, as most clarets are...(one or two will be gutted, but you know who they are, right?) and it's a phenomenal achievement, but because one player has a good game, and scores two, doesn't mean we shouldn't be looking at replacing him for someone better.

Let me be clear, he did well today, and right from when he first came to us on loan, i've been a fan of his, but this type of performance from him is the exception rather than the rule at this level.

I don't think I've seen Dawson, MaCauley or Evans lose as many headers as they did today - Sam did very well

Have a look at this pic from the BBC website. What ever is their keeper up to? Comical. (Still a great goal, mind)

He was excellent last week and again today, but in truth we probably need an upgrade if we're serious about kicking on and becoming established. But what do I know?

Have to agree with bobinho (for a change).

I'm sure there will be bitter arguments over our three strikers as Dyche has rotated all three to good effect but that's made it less clear as to where/who we could improve. Personally I think one needs an upgrade and I think it's between Vokes and Barnes.

We play 2 up front and have only 3 recognised first team strikers. We need another - it's an AND, not an OR.

Double figures for the season in the league isn't it so far?

That's not bad considering some people don't rate him and want an upgrade on him this summer.

I'm not usually a big fan but he has been excellent in the last two games.

Whenever he's played as the furthest forward man in a 442 for burnley, he's been excellent. Less effective when paired with Gray because he has to drop deeper. But of Gray goes this summer, then Vokes will be massive for us again, and i'd rather have him than Llorente.

I really do not get all this upgrade business what a few are on about.I think some live in cloud cuckoo land! In 20 starts he has scored 10 premier league goals that is some going! Could them who want a upgrade please put down a name are two within our budget? The lad has been terrific for us this year, great header of the ball, good with is feet for a big lad, holds the ball up superbly and most importantly give's his all!! We need one more striker to freshen things up but certainly not a upgrade he deserves his chance.

Vokes good target man to head a ball on or hold up the ball, Barnes terrier gets in and amongst defenders wins free kicks and Grey quick strong and dangerous all three offer different qualities and flourish in different games.

That would make a very good spot the ball pic.

Vokes has understandably taken time to adjust to playing at this level. He's looked a genuine Premier League centre forward in his last few games. Talk of needing to "upgrade" on him at this stage makes no sense at all. If we need an upgrade then its for Agyei to allow him to have a decent loan spell somewhere in he Championship.

I wonder if he's played better in the last two games because Barnes takes some of the pressure off him. They provide for each other where as he's expected to be the provider when playing alongside Gray.
