Re: spelling question
A chap relayed to me that the pitch had been relaid, during a relay, really.

Re: spelling question
relaid. The verb relay meaning to lay again follows the same rule as to lay, laid, and even lain if you;re feeling old fashioned. And putting the hyphen in is a pragmatic option to remove all confusion with relay, as in relay race, which does have relayed as the past tense.

Re: spelling question
Definitely relaid. It can be hyphenated or not. Your choice.

Re: spelling question
You could be moving turf with a team of people in a human chain. Then relayed is correct
Re: spelling question
It's only relayed as long as they're passing it from hand to hand - as soon as the last man puts it down, it's relaid.

Re: spelling question
I don't even understand why there's a question! Laid is the past participle of lay. All that is being done here is er..... doing it again so it's relaid, and has been said feel free to use a hyphen, though the context within the sentence should make it clear enough.
Head scratcher for me.

Re: spelling question
I'm pleased a man of your previous occupation and wordsmith abilities has the cojones to even ask.
It was relaid for me. To lay something down again vs to get an object from a to b in stages.

Re: spelling question
who really cares
It's a word, communication by language is just that, to communicate something such that other understand, spelling police are, well yes they are! Grammar and Capitals much more important than spelling.

I have a question.
Rooves or Roofs?
Apparently Roofs is correct, but is just doesn’t look right to me?

Re: spelling question
Capital letters are important, for example:
"helping your Uncle Jack off a horse" & "helping your uncle jack off a horse"
2 different meanings but you could say spelt correctly

Re: spelling question
Spelt or spelled?
Spelled is becoming more common but spelt is the traditional British preference.

Re: spelling question
Spades, when you wrote that down, and went through it in your head, did you imagine it out in a Home Counties accent? The empire's not doing that well you know.
