Post by cricketfieldclarets » Thu May 11, 2017 6:38 pm

Working in Aston listening to BBC Radio West Midlands. Topic is discussing WBA Transfer targets. WBA fans and pundits alike both expressing interest in Gray and Vokes.

Interesting to hear. Still on now. Talking Wolves at the minute though.

Not that I want Sam to go anywhere or expect him to, but how much do you think he'd go for if he was sold?

Is he worth £10 million or would he fetch £10 million?

Hard to say. He nearly has 10 goals from 20 starts. Is a full international is very experienced for his age and has a very good record at championship level alongside other strikers and in his own right. From the outside looking in he must be worth near that. Burbley fans would probably rate him at closer to 3m.

I suppose the answer would be whatever someone would pay for him, never really thought of it before.

Like most players he really benefits from a run in the side.

We score far more with vokes in thats for sure. Hes a great partner for a quicker striker. Proper old fashioned little and large combo.

Wba pundits also mentioning tammy abraham.

I get the impression that Sam Vokes is still improving, got to keep him.

Personally I think he is a lot like Rickie Lambert and will just keep improving with age. The only thing I would be looking at if I was a member of our sports science team would be if it was possible for him to lose a few pounds to possibly improve his speed a bit. That may just be me but I always get the impression he is carrying just a little bit of extra weight. Probably wrong just my view

I had heard from an extremely good source that WBA had offered an extremely large pay packet to lure Jay Rod to The Hawthornes this summer. In the words of my source "can't turn it down"

The best thing that Sam can do is the get a bit of Ashley's aggression. He is just too nice.

Inject Vokes with some of Andy Lochhead's genes, then you would have a real player.

Get the feeling Vokes could do better, no doubt hes done well and chipped in this year but a few tweaks would improve him significantly. As posted above, he looks heavy, doesnt look fully fit even though he will be. Just the way he moves. A bit more aggression would help too.

The reason I think he is carrying too much weight is after a short sprint when he shoots there seems to be no power in his shots. It's as if his upper thighs or glutes are carrying a little too much timber which after short sprints are meaning all the power has gone out of his legs. On numerous occasions he has burst (use the term loosely) through and the power in his shot has been lacking or he has dragged his shot well wide. This dragging can also be put down to too much weight on his glutes as it draws the strength from the lower legs which affects the control (accuracy), similar to having your legs took from under you.

Still a legend though and maybe just his body type. Either way still a great player

Target men tend to get better with age which is why I think we should keep Vokes( I'd also be devastated if he left). I think he lost quite a bit of mobility after his injury.

Real team player who has a habit of popping in with a valuable goal when you write him off

Agree with posters on here that question his weight. He is looking big and I do remember him being thinner. Think with some work from coaches he can improve further into a great target man

I think its just his natural shape. Hes not fat or out of shape. Just a big unit.

Amazing how many people bang on about 'Dyche Fit' yet we still have an overweight striker, according to posters in this thread.

Quite an analysis that.

I would say he just lacks a bit of composure and technique at times when presented with a good chance. Or it could be as you say his glutes or thighs are too big !

If we shrink his legs over the summer he could be worth £40million.

When you get up close he doesn't look overweight at all. Probably just his body shape as he's a big strong guy, although I sometimes wish he was more like Ashley Barnes when duelling for headers as you'd think he was 5 stone some games. Great player for us though.

Isn't this "overweight poor in the air" striker the guy who scored v QPR to promote us and against monster defence WBA to keep us there .Not bad going for a weakling in the air

Roberto Carlos had huge legs - he was fast and had a killer strike.

vokes doesn't need any of ashley barnes' aggression, he needs some of charlie austin's.

austin is one of the best i've ever seen at attacking a cross. if vokes could add that to his game, he'd be the complete target man.

I think both could be good additions to any of the 12 teams around us in the league.
