A deliberate cyber attack by the tories wiping out all of the data on A & E waiting times and number of weeks to see a GP.
At least we now know what the extra £50m a day can be spent on.

Looks like a ransomware attack. It's difficult to overstate how huge this could become.

Re: NHS Attacked
I had an appointment at the doctors this afternoon and when I walked into the waiting room it was completely empty. Usually you are lucky to get a seat! As I was only having my blood pressure checked, the nurse wrote the reading down instead of recording it on the computer and told me that all the computers were down. I guess all the other appointments had been cancelled.

Re: NHS Attacked
How bizarre, I had never heard of this company until today..
TPP the provider of the software have a massive advert running for grads to join them. The only reason I noticed the ad was because they had plastered across the billboard in 10 ft letters that they were offering jobs for £36k with no experience
I wondered who this tpp were out of curiosity because a job with no experience paying 36k seemed too good to be true.. Anyway, I looked at their website on the train home and saw the following as a benefit of working there
At TPP we value our employees and believe that everyone should be given responsibility and the opportunity to shine. As well as great careers, our employees are rewarded for their hard work with perks such as pub Fridays and fantastic holiday entitlement. Other benefits include:
Good luck NHS...

The East Lancs Trust has been hit badly.
My wife works at BGH and all their computer systems including the phones went down around lunchtime
Hope they manage to get the systems back on line soon as obviously it will have a knock on effect the longer it goes on.

Not all OS's are vulnerable Linux and Unix based servers are more secure.

We had a Ransome ware attack at work when one of the managers clicked on a link in an email without thinking about it.
Half a day of not doing much was quite nice, but they had to rebuild his PC, it was completely corrupted.

My first query was trying to establish the facts, and my point about all OSes is still valid. The primary reason non-windows devices appear more secure is because they aren't as popular and as such aren't targeted as much.brexit wrote:That is the ransomware it was spread by the SMB exploit which is the major issue. Really there's no need for any animosity about it.
For the record I am a systems specialist in VDI so I do know a fair bit about desktop and server security, mainly Windows OS, but others too.

Re: NHS Attacked
Linux and Unix systems are more secure because they don't try to do a lot. It's like saying a panic room is more secure than a multistorey office block therefore all businesses should work out of panic rooms. While it's true that they're more secure, the typical user can't do much in them.brexit wrote:That is the ransomware it was spread by the SMB exploit which is the major issue. Re: NHS Attacked
Love the total ******** on here again much fun yet
1) Working for a terminal server company that uses crappy citrix to connect to generic windows 8 images doesn't make you an IT expert.
2) Most "hackers" aren't hackers they are teenage script kiddies who download an exploit kit for 60 Euros from a belarussian website link. Hide as a link redirect the payment to a bitcoin account, spam email a tempting offer such as you have won an iphone to 1000000 email addresses and hope they get lucky. Oh and it is spelt nigeria. Bangladesh is where most of the coders in asia are Pakistan has virtually no IT infrastructure - that's why Bin Laden was talking to the world on 9600 baud modem.
3) There are no such people as white hats or blackhats just security experts -Mr Robot is a TV series and not real.
4) Linux is used on 95% of computing devices i.e. all android phones, most servers in commercial companies, your sky and tivo boxes. Linux is inherently safe because unlike MS you do not run programs with full privileges to hardware by default.
5) Macs are as bad as Microsoft for security holes but there are so few of them in use it is not worth the hassle of developing malware.
But on the bright side the "hackers" want 300 euros to decrypt the NHS files but 600K Euros to decrypt Telefonicas files. That must tell you something about the NHS.
My qualifications I work for CERT at Carnegie Mellon

Please, just stop trying to make out you're the billy big boll0x knowing everything, a lot of what you refer to is fairly accurate, but what you can't do is dismiss the opinions of others who you deem to be less informed.
I cannot tell you where I work, because it would breach my security clearance. What I can say is that I have colleagues who are unknown in the field of Cyber Security, and they like to keep it that way. I am just a VDI system specialist, but I don't work with Citrix, nor do I deploy to dodgy windows 8 boxes, I engineer extremely secure application and desktop delivery to a very secure organisation, but hey hats off to you for being better than me...

Amber Rudd has stated that the NHS must update outdated software and install new platforms. Given the size of the NHS and the complexities of linking the system to GP's etc presumably this will cost many millions of pounds.
Hopefully, the tories will pledge new money to the NHS for this IT upgrade and not expect NHS Trusts to find the money by cutting back on services provided to patients.

There was an IT guy on "any answers" R4 this afternoon. Said that his NHS area (I didn't catch what/where) used Windows 10 everywhere - except for 5 pcs which were still on XP because the vendor's application they ran/linked to was still on XP and hadn't been upgraded by vendor.kentonclaret wrote:Amber Rudd has stated that the NHS must update outdated software and install new platforms. That's most likely one of the issues for NHS (as well as other organisation), they have some technology that cannot be upgraded easily.

While we're on the subject of the NHS and technology, what are people's thoughts on the system working like the police?
By that I mean shared nationwide. I've been to hospitals where they know absolutely naff all about me and we have to start from scratch. The consultant I see now knows very little about me in terms of appointments at Burnley General, as they had to post the records and they got 'lost' in the post. If it was all networked up, there wouldn't be any need for that.
