The return of the tape cassette?

Post by Zom Zom » Sun May 21, 2017 12:48 pm

Not footie related, but interesting..

Gary Numan has Tweeted that his new album is currently having the sleeves designed for the vinyl, CD, deluxe CD and the cassette! :o and has caused a bit of a stir on bookface.

Anyone else caught anything of a relaunch of the old tape?

Can I anticipate the minidisc, the 8-track and the wax cylinder of his latest offering?

I'd better stock up on Biro's or pencils in preparation of winding the cassettes back in then.

There was something soulful about the crackle of a vinyl record, little wonder that they're making a comeback.

Cassettes on the other hand always had an annoying hiss that nobody would want to go back to.

I currently work for AQA (one of the main GCSE/A-Level providers) and we were shocked last week when we received some of a students coursework on tape cassette.....evenmoreso because when we realised that the course it was for was a video related course!

Tapes have been commonplace in certain sub genres of metal for years and are regarded as 'kvlt'.

I've still got cassettes that I listen to. Mainly in the car which has one fitted as standard along with a CD changer. Lots of old albums to listen to

Just a quick note to say that the Numan album - Savage - released yesterday is really rather bloomin' good.
Spine-tinglingly so, in fact. Atmospheric, soaring highs and throbbing, menacing lows - with a huge range and cinematic quality throughout.
Audiophile quality and no fillers - so grab a mate's a pair of Beats and treat yourself to 56 minutes of swirling, roaring audio indulgence.

anyone remember the philips dcc - digital compact cassette?

it came out around the same time as the sony minidisc and all the hi-fi magazines said it was head and shoulders above the minidisc.

it flopped.

It must be an undated version of the cassette surely. I'm delighted that vinyl is making a comeback but have very little enthusiasm for the return of the cassette

Copying music and games tape to tape was a great money spinner when I was at school.

The problem with cassettes is that generally people used crap ones on crap equipment. Alongside this, most pre-recorded music was on cheapo type I ferric tape or at best type II Chrome. If you could get hold of type IV metal tape set up on decent equipment and with Dolby C NR I promise the difference isn't that great from CD.

I woke up this morning (afternoon) and the first thing i thought wasn't "today i'm going to go onto UpTheClarets and learn about the virtue of Type IV metal tape played back with Dolby C NR over type I ferric or type II chrome tape".

The editing process to make sure not to get any of the DJ's voice on the fade-out was a lowlight.
