John Terry
John Terry
Like him or loath him you've got to say he's arguably the best defender that's played in the Premier league for many years.
At his best there was probably only Rio Ferdinand who came close, but he was certainly better than any other defender currently playing, and by a long way too.

Re: John Terry
Just returned home from a few days in London with the last 2 nights at the Copthorne Hotel, Stamford Bridge. He is certainly a legend around there and I agree entirely with Mark's comments.
I said at work as he was starting to play regularly for England that he was better than Rio Ferdinand at defending and would have a good career.
He hasn't done too bad.

Re: John Terry
It's because he didn't mess about with anything fancy, whilst Rio fancied himself as the next Baresi thanks to the hype about him when he was young.
As much as people bang on about defenders being able to pass the ball out from the back, you'll always struggle to beat a defender who will happily throw their body on the line.

Re: John Terry
He was very, very good. But lets not kid ourselves... he was no John McGreal.
Seriously, great defender. Morally challenged, but good at his day job.

Re: John Terry
Not the complete footballer Gary Cahill is.
Terry has been loosing his pace for the last two seasons a fact not gone unoticed by the Chelsea coaching staff.
If Eddie Howe wants to pay him for one last hurrah good luck to Terry.
I feel he should quit at the top
He's been on serious wages all his career and will be set for life.
Wether he heads into coaching is for him to decide.
Better players than JT have tried and failed dismally in the manager game

Re: John Terry
No argument for me either, the best defender in the Premier League era. He was a better footballer than some people give him credit for.

Re: John Terry
Terry and Ferdinand the best of their generation, and slightly preceding them Sol Campbell - personally I can't split them. Just on the defence alone (Neville, Terry, Ferdinand, Cole) it's ridiculous the 'Golden Generation' didn't achieve more for England.

Re: John Terry
Most definitely not as good as Jaap Stam. Terry was extremely slow at turning, so would never fit the style of Barcelona, but could defend.
But Jaap Stam for me was a level above Ferdinand or Terry.

Re: John Terry
No one has ever questioned what a good player John Terry was as far as I know.
Mind you, people on here thought David Jones was ****........

It was a shame Woodgate suffered all those injuries. He was top class as well. Ledley King too.

Vidic was the best central defender the PL has seen

As we were reminded earlier this week, there are 1.2 million reasons why Wayne Thomas must be considered in this discussion.
1.2 million was a lot in those days.

Terry was some defender. Hard to pick between him, Vidic, Campbell, Ferdinand, Adams. All good in their own way.

Ricardo Carvalho was a much better player than Terry, and probably made Terry look a lot better than he is.
in my opinion.

Re: John Terry
Certainly defenders can look much better as a partnership than on their own. Ben Mee looks a lot better alongside Keane; Cahill struggled at first when he didn't have Terry; Stones has looked shaky in City's comedy defence compared with when he had Jagielka as his rock.
You have to admire those who rise to the top level by recognising their weaknesses and maximising their strengths and Terry certainly did that; there've been quite a few who were better all round footballers than him.
