Has football gone mad??

Post by CaptJohn » Thu Jun 01, 2017 5:16 pm

Just looking through some websites regarding transfers and the sums involved are quite staggering. Ozil and Sanchez want 350,000 a week to stay at the Arsenal. Virgil Van Dilk is being offered something in the region of 170,000/week to go to City :o
Football has gone mad IMHO and I for one am seriously considering if I really want to be part of it. I love the fact that we're in the Prem for next season but I don't envy Mr Garlick and the board when it comes to transfers and wages. When will it all end?

I was thinking the same, city just spent £75m on 2 players n they paying them £200k per week. Think it is getting a bit of a joke now with fees n wages being payed & surely now is the time to bring in levels of say £50m per club max spend & £100k per week is the max a player can earn. Obviously it would have to be implemented world-wide to stop all the players going to China n other foreign shores. Also if all the prem managers had the same budget on fees n players we would then see really how good Conte, Pep, Kloop etc really are as managers against Dyche, Pulis, Clement etc.. More of a level playing field me thinks! Utc..

I saw somewhere that Virgil Van Dilk was valued at 50m - that's crazy. Also Keane shouldn't be far off if that's the case. I've said before, the NFL method would be a good way of sorting it out - with transfer caps and budgets based on wages that teams have to stay within (i.e. if they have big players on big wages, they get less to spend on new signings), and also the teams that finish in worse positions one one season get first picks on the upcoming youngsters the following year whilst the teams who finish higher get the lesser talented youths to choose from. Of course occasionally players who are chosen late in 'rounds' go on to be stars whilst sometimes the youths chosen early don't live up to expectation but at least on the whole it makes the process a bit fairer. It'd never happen here though.

It went mad years ago. Give it 2-3 years and players will be on over a million a week. It's got past the point where if you'll only stay with a club if they pay you £350,000 a week, instead of £300,000 a week, you need to take a long hard look at yourself.

They asked the same question when Sunderland flogged Alf Common to
Boro in 1905 for a grand.

you could really argue it started much, much earlier than that in the same town

As for players wages - go back to Jimmy Hill and the PFA in the early 60's - that is when the game started to leave the man in the street

Does anyone ever think that a salary cap might one day be worth a try. (All clubs can only spend a total of £x in salaries for their team). It might make things more equal in the long term though I think it would take something totally drastic for players wages to ever fall back.

Even Lenin didn't stick to that

neither does Jeremy - some people are more equal than others in that kind of world

Leagues 1 and 2 have financial restrictions.
I'm not sure how well it works but they try.

Want to sit on your arse-here's £30,000 but you cannot spend it as you are locked into your house as outside is full of rubbish and even if you could get out and try to leave the country all planes are grounded due to an absence of pilots. Only person at work is Jeremy answering questions to an empty House of Parliament. Jeremy stood for election and got in with the one vote he cast for himself; the candidates for the other 649 seats sat on their arses for election and were unelected as they couldn't get off their arses like the rest of the electorate to vote.

It is mad. But dont look at the figures. Dont even idiolise the players (unless you get a team like ours) just admire the skills. Surely everyone has a feel good factor with us in the prem?

Having a top team is good for the town. Good for the people. Even good for the economy. Enjoy it.

I'm not really bothered to be honest. Actors get paid too much, but I still enjoy films and TV.
