Cheick Tiote - collapsed and dies during training in China.

Post by Sidney1st » Mon Jun 05, 2017 4:28 pm

Rumours circulating that he's collapsed at training in China and he's passed away.

Still waiting for official confirmation though.

Nothing reported properly yet. Express.co.uk are, embarrassingly, reporting on twitter rumours.

FFS this is becoming all too common a theme especially with African players.

Is it the rigours of modern training or a genetic issue or combination of those and other factors?

Terrible.

I'm just having this chat about African players being the only ones we can recall.

There've been a few non-african players who have died on the pitch or in this way. But i wouldn't be too surprised if there was a higher instance of it happening to players from poorer countries since they're less likely to have received the kind of healthcare that could have foresaw things like heart problems as youngsters.

Very sad news. Whilst I'm aware it might be a bit insensitive to speculate on the cause of death; following on from some of the other comments, it's thought that Africans have a greater genetic predisposition to cardiac arrest. It has been shown in studies, but it is still unknown exactly why that is the case.

Hi IT, there was a young English cricketer who discovered he had heart problems last season. I'm not sure we can assign health issues to sports persons from poorer countries. It is certain that there is a lot more child mortality in poorer/less developed nations - none of these survive long enough to become sports persons.

He was a good player at Newcastle, tragic for one so young.

I think there were one or two small rumours about him joining us either the season just gone or the season before.

Very sad news and at such a young age.

RIP

Really shocked to hear this. The lad was still basically in his prime and was an absolute powerhouse of a midfielder. So sad RIP.

RIP Cheik.

my cousin is married to a guy of Indian descent, on both sides. Only in his 40s he has had a heart attack and 3, similar aged, friends have died of heart attacks whilst playing 5 aside. Another mate of mine of half Indian descent has had a heart attack also. He, thankfully, survived. Racial DNA could very well be a cause.

Maybe, maybe not.

I believe you were responding to previous post re African (heritage) players suffering heart/health problems - and saying that it has also happened to non-African players. You then mentioned healthcare in poorer countries. (I've abbreviated...).

Did I get that right?

Sort of.

I'm saying that if there are more instances of players from poorer countries dropping dead due to undiagnosed heart conditions its probably because they're the types of players who are less likely for it to have been diagnosed in their youth, as opposed to Africans being more likely to have those heart conditions.

If you're in a more wealthy country during your upbringing then you're more likely to be diagnosed and have it fixed, or just told you can't play professional football.

That's only one possible explanation though. There'll be others I'm sure.

Yes, I was about to mention Daniel Jarque. He played for Espanyol and died at the age of 26. There's a statue in his honour inside Espanyol's stadium.

Chuco Benitez died in a similar way I believe, former Birmingham Colombian player. I'm sure we were actually linked with Tiote last summer. Sad news

Yes we were linked last season. Remember it being mentioned.

Was a very good player. And seemingly an equally great character.

Joey Barton has written a tribute in today's Times. (Paywall - so I don't have link).

Joey reports: "With a new player coming in, especially in central midfield, I stuck a hard tackle in on him in the first training session. He came back not just with one but a few of his own. I thought, 'Great, you'll do for us.' It was clear straightaway that his fee £3.5 was very well spent.... meant me going out to right midfield but I wasn't going to complain when we had Chieck providing so much in the middle."

Possible that Joey was involved in trying to get Tiote to the Clarets.

Rest in Peace, young man.
