This week's Golf

Post by williamsorhowey » Thu Jun 08, 2017 2:36 pm

I wondered if the resident golf expert had any tips for this weekend.

Thanks

Not pretending in the slightest to be any kind of expert but have a bit of e/w on Thomas Pieters at around 40/1

If you mean the US Open that's next weekend - Pieters is 50/1 with Bet Fred - and he's a decent shout.

Other outsiders I like are Berger (100s), Kisner (80s) and Molinari at 100s.

Of the top players think Fowler and Spieth should both be thereabouts

I've always had a feeling that England's Paul Casey will one day win one of the Majors. It could just be next week.
Remember where you heard it first but would I put some money on him, probably not.

Caseys swing just looks so solid...almost like he couldnt fail to win loads....unfortunately as with westwood and plenty of others, when it comes down to the back 9 on a sunday he is found wanting.....I have mailed dog to see if he can post something up...utc.

Couldn't get hold of the expert but here's my take.... PGA event St June Classic from Memphis. It's already started - behind

Rickie Fowler is favorite and deserved – My main pick last week he played very well for T2nd . Stat wise he is a close this week but 7/1 is too short. I will try pick him up during play if he drifts out

Of the others (obvious picks in the market) that I like and are also good matches here but too short Adam Scott 12/1, Brooks Koepka 14/1 (2nd & 3rd last 2 appearances), Horschel 33/1 (great form and ball striker), Kyle Stanley 32/1 (ball striker but I Q his putting), Berger 32/1 (winner last year and form picking up. Another ball striker with longer irons). These i look at in play. Daniel Sommerhays went very close last week – interested in how he starts this week, he played 3 very impressive rounds but couldn’t close out his 3 shot lead going into the final day

Stats and trends
Not that strong a field - US Open is next week. Lots of water. Small greens. Suits ball strikers. First timers can win here. Following stats as guide:
• Strokes Gained Approach
• Strokes Gained OTT
• P4 Birdies or better
• Prox 150-175
• Gd Drive %

My pre play bets are these with low stakes wins and will check the Top10/20 markets:

Ian Poulter 64/1 . His form picked up at The Players with a T2. He played very well on approaches. This course suits that type of ball striking player and good approaches. He can go well. He has a T6 here in the past. At 64/1 it looks an excellent price
Seung-yul Noh 75/1 . Form decent with T5 last month. Has played well here in the past suggests he has the right skills. Only Q was he withdrew for some reason last week but 75/1 good price
Peter Uihlein 85/1 . A bit of an unknown but he’s an American been playing the Euro tour. In 3 apps on the PGA tour he’s had all Top 25’s. Caught my eye with 2 gd rounds last week after a bad start. May be hungry for PGA card
Kevin Tway 80/1 . I back him again. MC last week on unsuited course after 6 straight cuts and 5 straight T20 T7 3 T10. I sense he has the hunger

Other I consider – speculative & low stakes (also checking Top 20 markets)
Smylie Kaufman 120/1 MC last week tough course. After run of good form Good ball striker. Don’t think last week at the Memorial suited. Was a tough course for many
Russell Knox 120/1 Low stake win. No real logic to this bet other than I like Knox he has won and gone close for me before. It’s a gut feel bet. Accurate iron player had a horrible final round last week. Not exactly selling this but I think he has ability to win again and I like the odds
Grayson Murray 240/1 Making cuts again after Top 10's early season. Contended AT&T. Overcome injury issues. Good ball striking match

Casey usually a good each way bet (couple of the bookies like Skybet been paying first 8 places each way for Majors)

As Happy said he has an excellent game and does well on the PGA tour regularly but would be a big question mark if he could hold his nerve going down the final 9 in contention (suppose you can say that about all first time winners though !)

Tyrell Hatton is another English golfer who has performed brilliantly in the big events in last 2 years. As is Fitzgerald who played really well last weekend and seems to have a great attitude.

Justin Rose will be interesting - hardly played since the Masters but great US Open Record and could not have hit the ball any better than he did in Augusta.

Re. US Open - Agree on Casey - how he hasn't won more with the skills he has is a mystery - perhaps his putter deserts him on the final day. Such a solid all round game - he often goes well at Augusta. Need to drive it straight next week and Casey does that - he's a good shout - it's just that he should win more and doesn't and not sure why. Pieters I like a lot as well - feel he could win a major not sure it will be next week .... staying out of the rough is a must at the US Open (usually) may not be a good match for him. Molinari has played very well all year and not closed anything out ... great ball striker and one of the most accurate hitters US Open a good fit for him. Same Kisner - but he won 2 weeks ago ... i'm big on momentum with this and he may have peaked - 80/1 good though and this is a major. I will back Fowler - his accuracy is top and one of the best putters out there at the moment

a golfer I have my eye on for scottish or the open is Lowry....been solid lately state side but is a real wind player...so perhaps an event in texas where they get plenty of wind or our opens....a weather watch with him.

Scottish Open should be a quality field again.

Lowry coming back to some decent form and if his odds are 20/1 or better in any European event he is a great bet.

Noren will also probably be in the field and he (and the scandinavians generally) have a great record in the event. Stenson great player in the wind and was always a British Open potential winner for me - luckily I backed him !

Had you down as a Citroen man…

This course at the St Jude’s is a decent test and it’s a wide open tourney. Nice weather too and if the greens dry out players will need to hit fairways. For in play bets I am waiting for Brooks Koepka to drift out a bit and back him but he is playing very well and still 8 to 10/1 - he finished 2nd last year and 3rd the year before that, if you like sequences then it's his year. Mickleson was playing nicely too but broke then his driver. I also nibbled at Seamus Power just before the odds was a long price - young Irishman that has been noted a couple of times this year
