Underrated and unappreciated especially after all he has done for us and i imagine a key player in the dressing room.
Id keep him.

If Arfield goes we must keep Boyd.
We can't afford to let both go as they know our system inside out and until the likes of JBG and Brady are up to speed we need to keep that experience in some part.

Re: Arfield WBA £2.5m
For that sort of money there's no real need to sell - if he's still happy here I'd let him run his contract down. I wouldn't expect to see him starting next season but see no reason why he can't be competing to be in and around the match day squad. He seems to be a popular member of the squad and he knows our system very well. Mind you, if I could choose between keeping Arfield and Boyd I'd maybe choose Boyd.

I'd prefer him to stay. You can't underestimate the influence that Scotty has had on our team since SD signed him. We have to keep players like him.

Snap their hand off. Scott has done an amazing job over the last few years but although nice to have in the squad as back up, I feel we need to be at a level above the likes of Arfield to become a stable PL team.

Thanks for the memories especially that goal v Rovers but at times looked a little lost at the top level.
A fair price for a free transfer who we developed into a reasonable player but we can do better.

£2.5m seems a low fee these days for a transfer between 2 Premier League clubs of an experienced player even with only a year left on his contract. Unless of course that's the figure written into his contract.

In this age of transfer fees, we should be getting £5m for Arfield regardless of having a year left.

Gotta stay. Not as first choice but he knows the club, knows the system, and he'd be a good option from the bench.
£2.5m? I'd be inclined to keep him and let the contract run down.

Not sure I believe his one at all. The article states they want someone to replace Darren Fletcher for a start. I'm not sure Scotty is the right man to do that!!

WBA are a pretty stable Prem club?
They seem to want him..

Does that mean we don't need reserve players,or that you think we can get a better reserve for significantly less than £2.5m? If we sign better wingers, fair enough; but for now, Arfield has a vital role at the club and his loss could be crucial.Holtyclaret wrote:Snap their hand off. Presumably he'll only leave if we want him to as he is still under contract. If we are happy to let him go it suggests we think we have a better replacement lined up. That said, I would rather we had players in before letting others go.

Re: Arfield WBA £2.5m
When I watch Scotty in the pre-match warm up he oozes confidence. He has a swagger. From outside the 'D' he power drives the ball almost splitting the net and then he sublimely places the ball nonchalantly clipping the inside of the post. Always with that shoulders back swagger.
What frustrates me is when the ball comes to him in that position during the match, even with space around him, he moves the ball on sideways. I'd love to see him wrap his boot round it more often.
Maybe WBA think they can get that swaggering player with an eye for goal that I'd love to see for 90 mins.
Having said that, Scotty personifies the journey this great club has been on, an integral part of our recent success.
My lasting memories of Scotty will be running the length of the pitch full pelt holding Duff's hand celebrating that goal. And the goal away at Brentford.
Those two moments, to me, sum up Scotty's ability and unstoppable commitment.
And I want more of them.
I'd love to see him break the net at Hudds away next season tho... just to satisfy karma.
But only SA and SD know if that wave has petered out.

Worth far more than £5m. How many PL appearances had he made ? He's worth far more than that to someone in the Championship too. Id keep him as part of squad and let Boyd go.

No, it means I feel we can do better. That £2.5m would go towards a replacement I guess or a free with loads of PL experience on a larger wage.dsr wrote:Does that mean we don't need reserve players,or that you think we can get a better reserve for significantly less than £2.5m? Who knows what will happen, but we can certainly do better quality wise ditto with Boyd. Out of the two I'd rather retain Boyd. Absolutely nothing against Scott (he was exceptional away at Palace).
Re: Arfield WBA £2.5m
Boyd and arfield are so underrated! Your talking about two players who where part of a 23 undefeated team in the championship, and a great season this time.We could go out and spend 15m each on two wide 'flair' players, and you could almost guarantee the home record would be worse without these two in instead.

The away record couldn't possibly get worse though. We might (shock horror) try and win an away game if we had some quality out wide.bfc1984 wrote:Boyd and arfield are so underrated! Not a massive Arfield fan tbh but as other people have said for such a small amount of money we may as well keep him as a squad player for a year and let him run his contract down, particularly if Boyd leaves. I'll still be amazed if he got a move to another Premiership club.

difficult to offer him an extension, because of age and the required upgrade, but for that money has to be worth keeping.
Re: Arfield WBA £2.5m
Would be better for him to step down to a championship club with a three year deal (maybe Leeds?).

Re: Arfield WBA £2.5m
After 2 wins in 16 it's difficult to argue that Plan A still works for us.
Re: Arfield WBA £2.5m
Arfield has revived his career with us and served us reasonably well
but can't see him starting too many games next season.
We probably need to see this as an opportunity both for the club and Arfield.
If he does leave then he will probably get a two or three year contract and
we'll get a few million for him. The alternative will be that he will leave on a free at the end of next season.
Next season will be another difficult, if not more difficult season for us than this last one
especially if we lose two or three key players.
But we'll need to look at it as an opportunity to get others in and possibly adjust
our system and formation which is something, I believe, we will need to do in order to
survive another season in the Premiership.

Re: Arfield WBA £2.5m
I'd be very surprised if wba wanted him. He's been a stalwart for us but at this level; he drifts in and out of games, he lacks pace and while that might not necessarily be a problem his ball retention is not of premier league standard. He gives the ball away too often. To temper that, his commitment is fantastic, when he's "on" he's a real threat and gets the odd important goal.
I'd keep him as a squad player, I'm hoping even with our squad as is we'll play with Gudmundsson and Brady out wide as first choice. He offers something different to them. But a regular week in week out player? Top end of the championship for me. If he stays fit, I think Gudmundsson will be a real asset next year.

Re: Arfield WBA £2.5m
I'm probably being thick but if we allow SA to leave on a free next summer it will cost us £2.5m (or whatever we can convince someone to pay, up to £5m?) in theory plus his wages and bonus to keep him for next year. That's less than Bournemouth are paying for Defoe.
As said above, love SA to bits and he epitomises everything that we have achieved over the last few years but he is miles off PL quality and we should aim for better. I think he fared worse overall last season than our previous spell in the PL. SA moving on will 'force' our slow evolution to a more fluid and attacking style hopefully.

For me it depends on how well JBG and Brady are adapting to the system SD utilises.
Certainly would be a risk losing SA. Would like to see him stay as a squad player even if that means him leaving on a free next year. We would not be able to get anyone near as effective in the system for 2.5m

Exactly. After we signed Brady in January there were still quite a few games where Arfield was selected ahead of him and this was mainly because he knew the system and could work to the game plan well.ClaretAndBlue94 wrote:For me it depends on how well JBG and Brady are adapting to the system SD utilises.

I understand that he's not a headline player or as exciting in as many ways as someone like Brady or potential future signings and I'm not saying that I would have him as first choice but he's shown time and time again that he is effective in our system and to have that person as part of our squad, if even just a bench player, is a useful thing.

Boyd and Arfield are very sought after players. Who else in any league has shown such commitment to a team style and sacrificed their own game for just getting up and down in support of others? I hope both re-sign and I just can't understand why we are so tardy in extending contracts mid way, like other clubs. We should not be having all these nervy moments.

Hmmmm.... so a large chunk of the posters on here spend the season saying that Arfield is not good enough and that we need to look to upgrade him this summer.
He posts on social media comments that make it look like he might be off.
Rumours start flying that other clubs want him.
Fans now start saying "we need to keep him".
Hmmmmm....
In my opinion, for what it's worth; if the boss wants him to stay then he can stay. If the boss wants to move him on to free up space in the squad for a new player then so be it. Perhaps money for Arfield could be used to make an improved contract offer to Boyd?
He's done us well- but I think that we need to be looking to improve the squad and I just don't think that he's going to help us move forward and secure our position long term so I'm personally ambivalent about his future. I'll simply trust the manager's decision....
