British Columbia Canada State of Emergency
State of Emergency in British Columbia as over 200 wild fires rage out of control threatening many Cariboo communities, Ashcroft, Williams Lake and especially 100 mile House are in danger with over 5000 people evacuated and small towns like Cache Creek, and Spencers Bridge on the brink of being destroyed. A terrible situation with most fires out of control.

Horrendous. I think we have seen enough flames this year.
Hope everyone escapes ok and their homes survive.

This is so sad to see. I absolutely adore Canada; it's stunning on so many ways. Been to BC twice and was fortunate enough to spend my honeymoon there with my wife back in 2014.
We drove the Rocky Mts and all so many of the lakes that are found around the mountain slopes. We drove around Medicine Lake just days after the fire there had been put out... thousands and thousands of acres.... burnt to nothing!
It's so sad.

It isn't just British Columbia who gets forest fires. If anybody has driven the Trans-Canada Highway between Thunder Bay and Kenora, Ontario, you go through a stretch of second growth forest that was burnt out about 20 years ago. Miles upon miles of dwarf spruce and pine that is nature's way of regenerating what is a very, very valuable resource in Canada's economy. Situation very dire in B.C. right now, and will continue to be until there is a good soaking rain.

You're in Vancouver, aren't you CC? No danger of forest fires there, except maybe in Stanley Park. I remember Cache Creek, when it was still on the main route between Vancouver and Calgary. The main industry was/is running cheap motels. But it was quite a trip going up Hell's Gate in the pouring rain. I had never, and have never, ridden a road quite like that ever in my life.

Just outside Vancouver about 3 hrs from nearest fire, just terrible there right now. 10,000 evacuated many small towns throughout the Cariboo area threatened.

Re: British Columbia Canada State of Emergency
I think that Victoria, the capital, which IS on Vancouver Island, is an older locality. So it got first choice when the naming came about. I also think that Vancouver was called Gastown originally. That happened quite a lot over here. Toronto was originally called York, my village of Brooklin was called Winchester, Whitby was called Windsor, it goes on and on. There's also a city called Vancouver in Washington state in the U.S. Apparently, George Vancouver, who discovered everything, was quite a popular guy.

Ottawa, our capital, was originally called Bytown, after Col. By, who engineered the Rideau Canal from there to KIngston.

Re: British Columbia Canada State of Emergency
Update
Not good news, no sign of rain, lightening still starting fires ( over 200 burning )Village of Boston Flats destroyed (near Ashcroft) Many houses destroyed and over 14,000 evacuated throughout the Cariboo Region (about 300 miles North of Vancouver)
Whole towns on evacuation orders. Weather forecast for next 7 days not good. Miraculously no loss of life.
On a Light note a boy told to mark his horse so it could be found in smoke...Horses name Rosie.

One hose on a fire like that isn't going to do much good.
