UK Golf Breaks

Post by Jakubs Tash » Mon Jul 31, 2017 7:58 pm

Just got back from a quality couple of days at Celtic Manor - great courses, superb facilities and service. Just wondering if any golfers out there have any recommendations for other UK golf trips? Usual format is two rounds (prefer 2 x different courses but not essential) and one night accommodation.

Other succesful trips have seen us visit Scotland where we played Dundonald Links, a Welsh trip that saw us play Nefyn and the excellent Royal St Davids as well as numerous trips down to Hertfordshire where we usually try and fit a Clarets away game into the equation.

Hawkstone Park in Shropshire was always excellent but not been for a few years.

Two excellent courses and great hospitality

Where did you play in Hertfordshire ?

Le Touquet was always our favourite trip. Belle Dune was fantastic with le Mer always being a challenge. 2 good courses at Hardelot nearby also.

the National just outside Cardiff was a good venue, comfortable, good food and 2 good courses.

Portal is great 2 great courses / Spa / Accom / Food etc

Formby Hall is well worth doing - aone main course (play twice) plus a 9 hole par 3 course for a bit of fun / warm up.
All 9 holes on the par 3 course are mini versions of famous par 3 from round the world.

Carden Park 2 great courses / Spa / Accom / Food etc

Loads of "Sunday Driver" deals out there (play Sunday and Monday with accom and meals).

Formby Hall is great - play there once a year

Went to the Breadsall Priory (Marriott) in Derby last month and it was brilliant - 2 excellent 18 hole courses (one of them is a championship course on Trilby tour).
Hotel is very nice - and food great. It's not far from Derby - but we didn't go in.
You can great deals there - golf, evening dinner, breakfast, hotel room for £150 per room.

Also done the Belfry - that was good. 3 courses. We played the Brabazan which was great and then one that was not brilliant. But I think we chose wrong one as the other one supposed to be good. Again loads of deals on.

We've played loads down there! Best ones have probably been Brocket Hall, Letchworth and a really good municipal called Panshanger.

Been to Carden Park a couple of times - two very decent courses.

Also played Portal a couple of years ago. Again, a good venue.

I've heard good things about Formby previously so these recommendations add to that - thanks. The Par 3 course sounds like it could be a bit of fun too!

The Grove just outside Watford is superb but not cheap,Knebworth is worth a visit, Welwyn Garden City (Manicotts Road) is always in good trim but my favourite would be Brookmans Park which is 11 minutes by train from Finsbury Park for Arsenal.

Panshangar is good when in excellent condition, not too fussed otherwise. Mill Green in WGC is very good. front 9 is parkland and back nine with lakes and trees (lots of them). Like playing 2 different courses.

Brocket Hall (old course) is fantastic. Blagged a few free games there. Haven't played the newer one.
Pal of mine works at the Grove but not had time to play there yet.

Unfortunately my Pings are gathering dust in the garage....

Par 3 is fun - you can do it in under an hour. Perfect way to "walk off" the last nights evil liquid and the massive breakfast before 2nd round.

There are some other very impressive tracks in the near area also.
Hesketh is one.
and Formby Ladies (don't let the name put you off) are 2 well worth a visit. Formby Hall very helpful also with arrangements.

Personally I love Hawick (Scot' boarders).
Stay in the town, Play Hawick on edge of town, Minto is very near also and other options.
The Roxburgh (sp?) is nearish for eg.

Hawick is my fave UK course + history + cracking value.
Monty and Faldo used to play it alot (had a helipad in field next door!)
Met the late Bill Mclaren there and he gave us a commentary of us all teeing off on the 14th - very funny and surreal!

I'm off to Le Touquet tomorrow, but I'll be drinking beer rather than playing golf. :)

Hill Valley in Whitchurch had a couple of decent tracks.
Not played there for a few years, but always enjoyed the challenge.
