The lower league Stuart Taylor, judging by his CV.
He's more than happy to play as little football as possible.

I guess it's hard trying to find someone to come in to be 3rd choice, but this does smack of signing any old keeper to fill the spot.

People were dismissive of Heaton when he first arrived, that hasn't turn out to badly has it,assume he will be 3rd choice anyway, so unlikely to feature unless we have a crisis.

We need cover and once we get a third goalkeeper it will allow us to get Conor Mitchell out on loan for some experience. Who were people expecting as a third choice goalkeeper?

Well, we have a third choice keeper.
It shows the complete lack of ambition that the board have that we didn't try to persuade Buffon to join

We have a youngster you fudd. His name is Pope.
Why are some moaning about signing a player who is unlikely to see 5 appearances this season and is purely signed for cover?

Re: Adam legzdins
1. England international who is literally first name on the teamsheet.
2. Young player to learn from number 1.
3. Experienced player for young player to learn from when England international is busy.
4. Mitchell (Another young player) gets to go out on loan for first team experience.
Your obsession with youth is quite worrying ABlueCoyoteLiar. Maybe you should stick to making up evidence and lies?

Re: Adam legzdins
Guess it depends on the purpose of a third choice keeper.
If he's literally there to make up the numbers at training and reserve games, then I guess anyone will do.
Last year the model appeared to be Heaton backed up by a vastly experienced former international keeper and one with a lot of promise.

I am all for signing an experienced guy as third choice keeper, to pass on his vast experience to our younger keepers, but Legzdins has no experience of anything other than getting splinters in his arse

Re: Adam legzdins
I'd have thought the question is quite simple. Would you be ok with any of the three goalkeepers starting a game this season if needs be?
Last season I think the answer was yes. Robinson had a hell of a career behind him and Pope had just been an ever-present in the Championship.

Re: Adam legzdins
What is the point of putting a youngster in at 3rd choice? A youngster (Connor Mitchell) needs game time to develop not to be sitting getting splinters with little chance of a game. Legzdins is very leftfield but if he is happy to sit there and be backup then fair enough. Very unlikely we will have to rely on him but then again Robinson (our alleged 3rd choice) got the nod over Pope when Heaton was out so who knows.

Re: Adam legzdins
I sort of see the point being made here, but we have an unmoveable first choice, a very promising second choice and now an experienced third choice.
I get the negativity to a point, but this signing does make sense.

Correct! He's 30 and done almost nothing. This is not a replacement of Paul Robinson - such a frustratingly confusing signing when we should be focusing on elsewhere! Why aren't we spending?

Re: Adam legzdins
When will Nick Pope go on loan and get some experience?
He's older than Jack Butland and Jordan Pickford, and he hasn't been entrusted with a Premier League game yet. Is he not good enough? If he isn't, why's he remaining 2nd choice?
He'd scare the living daylights out of me when faced with Aguero, Hazard, Lukaku etc

Re: Adam legzdins
He eventually moved up to second choice last season with the manager saying that had always been the plan so I'd expect him to be on the bench on Saturday. He's looked more than competent enough in the cup games he's played.UpTheBeehole wrote:When will Nick Pope go on loan and get some experience?

We still need a winger and a centre half, and to be quite honest all seems to have gone quiet on both fronts.

Re: Adam legzdins
Seems to fit the profile for me. Experienced but happy to bide his time. Low cost keeper to challenge Pope. No brainer really. I'm not sure what people were expecting. You'll be hard pressed to find a keeper willing to be happy sitting on the bench who is of any outstanding quality. Randolph buggered off from West Ham as soon as the ink had dried on Hart's contract and he's nowhere near as good as Heaton.
That's one less place to worry about. Mitchell needs game time and we needed back up in case Pope or Heaton were injured. Seems a shrewd bit of business.

You wouldn't want someone who is prepared to sit around you want a youngster to challenge your top two.
Experience all only get you so far, somewhere along the line this club needs to remember it's talent that counts at this level.

Re: Adam legzdins
Keeper is a Premium position. Outfield players can play generally in several positions and do a job. I.E. Dyche trying Taylor in Central Defence in pre-season offers us an option, should Dyche see him as an option to play centre half, and/or left back, or even left wing. A keeper is just that. A keeper. Unless you envisage Tarkowski as our third choice keeper as well as a midfielder. We needed another keeper!ablueclaret wrote:Pope is fine, but this signing makes no sense at all other than wasting a bit more money and clogging up a place.

I think it is the one position you are allowed to make an emergency loan on, but I might be wrong about that.
Re: Adam legzdins
30 years old is geriatric?
Re: Adam legzdins
I haven't been impressed by Pope when I've seen him.
His kicking in particular was woeful last Tuesday, with one from his hands looping out before reaching half way, and two real shanks with his left foot which only made it about 30 yards.
A decent PL team would capitalise on that. They'd press him and force him to kick with his left, and mop up the miskicks. There aren't any other PL keepers that poor with their wrong foot, being able to welly it at least half way is a bare minimum requirement for anything above Sunday League, surely.

Re: Adam legzdins
That shows how little knowledge you have because it does not clog up a place but fills a hole which also allows a young goalkeeper to go out on loan an gain some experience. We can't go into a season with only two goalkeepers.ablueclaret wrote:Pope is fine, but this signing makes no sense at all other than wasting a bit more money and clogging up a place.

Sounds like Heaton will need to stay fit.
If he were to be injured, it would be interesting to see who steps in.
