Flu jab

Who's getting a flu jab? Free on NHS for over 65s - and those with heart conditions and other major illnesses.

Apparently there's the possibility of a pandemic this winter; Australia and New Zealand "had it bad" earlier this year.

I got my flu jab this afternoon. Used to get them at work, or paid to get it at Boots (other chemists are also available) when work didn't provide.

I wonder do Premier League footballers get flu jabs? Would it help stop squad members getting sick?

Asthma means I get one, but only if I ask for it, whereas they used to send out letters for people with Asthma.

I think its only £10 to get one at Sainsburys anyway.

Yes i have 1 every year due to asthma.

Tesco do them there and then if you take ur inhaler

Not now I'm in Oxfordshire.

Also at my Burnley GP I could ring up and order a new inhaler, whereas down here I have to do it either online or pop into my GP's and do it in person.
They also ask me why they don't see me often down here, I only see them twice a year on average about me and one of those is so the asthma nurse can check I've still got it

Can't agree with that one....following the missus stroke if she got sick it could be life threatening so she will be having her jab next week!

You must be a doctor as well cricketfield..
Why do you think they provide them to certain 'at risk' groups..

Because of asthma I have a flu jab every winter..
Occasionally I get a very bad asthma attack (maybe 4-6 times a year) usually because I have forgotten to take my inhalers on time..

I really really would not like to have 'proper' flu at the same time, that would not be pleasant.

I've had a letter for the last few years inviting me to have a flu jab as I am apparently elderly, infirm or at risk. Not sure which one applies most.

I think I know where Cricketfield is coming from.

It's the fit and healthy folk who get these jabs. Some folk don't develop a proper immune system because they take so much medicine.

Again I feel very boring, I'm not asthmatic, never had a flu jab and never been depressed enough to mention it on here.

I'll probably die of combination of all three.

I qualify for one due to the drugs I have to take because of psoriatic arthritis. Always have the jab, flu is a very unpleasant disease, why wouldn't anyone have it if offered?

DO NOT have the flu jab.
The government puts things in it to make the populace compliant.
Nano components in the serum makes one respond to their commands.

Unsurprisingly, this is all CIA approved.

I've had one for the past few years. I'm 65+ and had major heart surgery 3 years ago- so highly recommended.
Last year I had it down my local Co-op convenience store. Popped over there one morning for a bottle of milk & paper and they were offering the jab from their part-time pharmacy "kiosk". Very convenient.
Never had any side effects whatsoever.

Hi BoT, and what has vitamin C and D got to do with influenza? I think you are confusing flu with "man flu" or the common cold. I'm sure your GP will explain the difference.

Even if you are fit and healthy and flu will be "no big deal" for you, a jab (may) stop you developing flu and (may) stop you passing it on to someone who doesn't have your defences, an elderly person, perhaps, or a young child. They are the ones you would be helping to protect.

At least that's one of the reasons we get vaccinated.

Hi South West, I said exactly the same to the nurse with her needle this afternoon - she looked at me a "little blank." I guess she's been too busy to read the news that the jab is more effective if we smile.

People are getting ill because we have become too clinically clean. How can you build up an immune system if there are no germs. Nowt wrong with chewing lead pencils when I was at school or having your chips out of newspaper. If I was thirsty I was told to get corporation pop (probably to wash the lead down

), now it's all in bottles.

Weeks of misery, sttruggling to move, bed changing every day due to sweating and the overwhelming feeling I was going to die.

I have had influenza and it isn't very nice, especially when like me, you have COPD.

I have to wait until this head cold I caught last week has gone and is 7 days clear before getting my jab but at the moment it shows no sign of 'doing one'

For those that have a flu jab, does it always stop you getting flu, or do you just get weaker symptoms because your immune system is ready to deal with it?

Hi Hipper, I think the NHS/Gov't statistics don't claim that everyone who gets the flu jab will NOT get flu - just as many of those that do not have the flu jab might still avoid flu. However, if you get the jab you will reduce your risk of getting flu - and, if you do get it, it will be less severe than it otherwise would have been.

I understand that the vaccine has to be prepared for the specific strain of flu that is expected each winter - and, I believe that some years they've prepared for a slightly different strain. If this happens the jab won't be as effective...

But, I've got public transport into London over the past 30 years for work and my experience has been good. Yes, colds and "man flu" but never anything too serious.

I was responding to the question of 'why wouldn't anyone have it (flu jab) if offered?'.

Well me for one, because there are fruit and veg (and other foods) that help to keep the immune system up.

I'll make it clear again, I'm only talking about the fit and healthy people, and not the young, the old or those who have breathing problems or other ailments that flu if caught could be very dangerous.

I'm a big believer in, you are what you eat. And if you eat a lot of shite, you'll feel shite a lot.

We often start taking vitamin C once we’re sick, and it surely helps (try 800mg every 20 minutes when you’ve already got a cold or flu), but citrus fruit and juice, a great source of vitamin C, can actually help prevent illness by creating stronger cells that deflect virus and germs.

I hear too many people say they've 'got flu' when they've got a cold. Flu is completely different, I've only had it once in my life thankfully and from experience I can say that I'd never mix the two up again.

I came home from college one lunchtime, pretty much right as rain and an hour later I had taken to my bed, where I stayed for about the next eight days. During the first few days, if there had been a fire in the house, I honestly don't think I could have got out of bed to escape. If a flu jab saves people from that, then flipping have one.

I'm with Dushanbe, a lot of people say they have "the flu" when it's a cold. There's a very big difference and you dont want to have proper flu if you are old/infirm/heart condition etc.
The only time I had flu, I was about 30 & very fit, me and my wife both caught it, fortunately before we had kids. Both took to bed and nether of us could be arsed to get up and make food, pot of tea, had to resort to getting her mother to come round for an hour per day for a few days to make some soup etc.
I'm 67 now, reasonably fit for my age but have had heart surgery, it would take me ages to get over proper flu now. Hence I will have the flu jab.
People saying they can take vitamins /shrug it off because they are hard etc are wide of the mark.

The first time my left lung collapsed!

The inactive flu virus it contains causes your immune system to build up anti bodies. This is why you shouldn't have it if you're already under the weather as your immune system will already be working flat out.

It's possible that you can feel a bit under the weather whilst your immune system is working hard. Personally I've never had that with the flu virus, nothing more than a sore arm for a couple of days.

Any minor side effect is better than flu.

Over the years, the most I've experienced is a very little tenderness around the area of the injection, nothing more.

I had flu jab on Wednesday afternoon. Thursday morning I was in the gym - an hour's "vigorous" exercise. Vigorous, that is for a 63 year old rebuilding after a heart attack in early 2016.

Yes, there are different strains of flu - that's why we need a new vaccination every year. The health authorities have to predict the vaccine they need. Occasionally they are "a little off."

Never had it and am not in an at risk category. I get a low of colds but I've only had the flu once, around ten years since. Horrible and wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Tend to agree with bot and cricketfield but undoubtedly some at risk people should get the jab.
