Which Player Did You Base Your Game On As Lad
I've said elsewhere on this forum that my favourite all time Claret is Brian O'Neil but I could never tackle like him and I was never a driving force in midfield.
But I was fairly quick and I could cross a decent ball so my game was based around Ralph Coates.
Those of us of a certain vintage will remember how fleet of foot Ralph was and how he could hit the touchline and seem to flick over those great crosses from either wing.
The likes of Andy Lochhead and Willie Irvine must have thought all their birthdays had come at once when they saw Ralph's name on the teamsheet.
So who was yours?

As a right full back/goalkeeper when I was very young it was John Angus and Harry Thomson.
Funnily enough I wasn't as good as either of them and never made it.

John Connelly but without the pace.
A goal scoring winger who could cross a ball with either foot. That's it for positives and the negatives would take too long to list.

A teacher likened me to Peter Noble with hair...I always wanted to play more like cruyff but he wouldn't allow me to...the bugger ruined my potential

Denis Irwin. I loved playing Left back whilst being predominantly right footed. I also practised as much as I could with my left and whilst I could strike an accurate ball I could never get the power.

As a young goalkeeper I was a massive fan of Adam Blacklaw, but i wanted to be Gordon Banks the 2nd!

Good point - he was sat on the sidelines in his dads sack. He only won the race because he came on late and was fresh.Juan Tanamera wrote:bfccrazy. Are you sure Kevin Long had been born when you were a lad?

Can't think of a name but anyone who wasn't quite good enough, but would play anywhere and anytime for the love of the game. I played matches in every position I think although I do have a 100% record of scoring when playing up front maybe it should be a Striker. Sent the keeper the wrong way with a left foot thunderbolt er that or it was mainly down to it slicing off my foot the wrong way he never lived it down.

Steve Davis. Fancied myself as a cultured centre half.
Unfortunately I played football like the other, other Steve Davis.

Grew up in Swindon, and they were usually sh!t with no heroes apart from Don Rogers who was before my time.
Spent many a goal celebration on the field shouting “ZICO Oooooooooooooo” though

If I was playing in midfield it was Gordon Harris, centre forward Ray Pointer, left half Martin Dobson or me, or on the wing Willie Morgan and George Best.

I always tried to be like Gary Lineker. Scoring loads of goals and not much running.

I was usually playing ‘3 & Yer In’ so it was Peter Beardsley and then after my 3 worldies, I turned into Peter Shilton.
Re: Which Player Did You Base Your Game On As Lad
Brendon O'Connell and then as I realised I was a better defender more Joe Jackub / little later Les Thompson Julian Dicks

I was a 'hard as nails' Glenn Hoddle.

It would be an insult to claim I modelled myself on anyone who could kick a ball

Another John Angus here. I loved a tough tackle and trying to look very calm & collected about everything.
Played hundreds of games at right back but never once played anything like as well as he always did.

Always a claret, but it was collar up with chest pushed out oh ah cantona. He was something else but the only problem was I tried to copy that chip he did which was similar to defour's last year, only thing Is it resulted in me climbing over the fence to retrieve the ball every 5mins!
