First Game Memories
Just for a laugh and a bit of nostalgia. Who can remember their first ever game watching Burnley?
Mine was 4th January 1969, 3rd round FA Cup v Derby County at the Turf. 3-1 winners against Cloughies soon to be second division champions (and shortly afterwards League Champions). Stood in the Bee Hole End looking across the pitch at the still half-built Cricket Field Stand. I seem to think it cost me £1-10s (£1-50). That's roughly 1/20th of todays cost in the PL. I never missed another home game for over 10 years (apart from a pre-season friendly one year).

Boxing Day 1971. We beat Blackpool 2-1 I think and I seem to recall Dave Thomas playing for us that day.

Wasn't the CFS opened in the mid-60's?
Edit: Wikipedia says otherwise. In my defence I wasn't born then.

Re: First Game Memories
30th March 1991 against Chesterfield at home. I was 11 and I went with my mate and his step dad who used to write the blurb about the away team in the match day programme. He was a bit of statto and on the way to the game he was proudly telling me how only three teams in the top four divisions had an unbeaten home record that season. One I can't remember, one was Arsenal and the other was Burnley.
We lost 0-1.
We lost 0-1.

FA Youth Cup Final 1968.
Can't remember the first time I attended a first team home match but my first away game was at Blackpool Boxing day 1970.
I ran on the pitch at half time to get Ralph Coates' autograph.
I got a clout off my dad for my troubles.
Edit: I do think it might have been Forest that 68/69 season.

Re: First Game Memories
October 1967, Burnley v Fulham. Clarets won, 2-1, I think. A very young Alan Clarke missed a pen for Fulham. I stood near the corner flag in the cricket field end - before the stand was closed for re-development. I'd have to look up the rest of the facts. I was a few more times before the CFS was closed - never been in the "new" CFS.
I was taken on by my Dad two or three seasons early v ManU - but my Dad was a red, so I don't count that. Think it was 1-1. Only time I've been in the old Bob Lord.
UTC
EDIT: Also saw the Clarets - a "select" team, I think - play Accrington Stanley at Peel Park. A fund raising friendly, a little before Stanley folded in 1962 (?). Anyone have any more details of this game?

Ipswich Town 3 Burnley 2. Sept 1973. I think we were second going into the game. Taffy scored a beauty and Doug Collins got the other. Great game between two very good sides and as a 10 year old I was hooked!

At eight and a half years old went with big brother. Even though we are born and raised in Hertfordshire I was hooked and have supported the Clarets ever since.

Re: First Game Memories
My first game was the champions league! Think it was a Tuesday or a Wednesday night on the 16 November 1960 at Turf Moor. We were playing Reims and we won 2-0. Me and my dad were stood in the beehole behind the nets. I know at one point I was on my dads shoulders. Think there were around 38000 on! I was 6 years old.
Re: First Game Memories
My first first team game was against Northampton, the very first game at 4th division level. 3-0 up at half time and everyone seemed to be looking forward to a stroll out of the league. 3-2 at full time had tempered the mood a little in our household at least.

4-4 with Norwich and 3-3's with Orient and Southampton. 20 goals in my first 3 games and I can't remember anything about them now.
First real memory was Ian Brennan pulling one back with a header to make it 1-2 vs WHU. Then going on to win 3-2.

Just to clarify (cos you got me thinking) Paul Wain's post says he was in the cricket field end in 1967 before they even closed it to build the stand and went to several more games before they closed it to build the new stand. Wikipedia is great but is populated by enthusiasts not experts. It does need editing. I recall the stand was built but had no seats. Incidentally does anyone actually know when it opened? I can't remember.TheFamilyCat wrote:Wasn't the CFS opened in the mid-60's?

Re: First Game Memories
Great games on two successive weekends (we were at home two Saturdays on the trot). The Norwich game was amazing, we were 4-1 down at half time and pulled it back. Can you remember though that if Brian Flynn hadn't missed a sitter late on we would have won 5-4. That is one of the most memorable games for me. The following week we came back from 0-3 against Orient. Strange how two very memorable games were against Orient eh?boiledclaret wrote:4-4 with Norwich and 3-3's with Orient and Southampton. 20 goals in my first 3 games and I can't remember anything about them now.

Re: First Game Memories
Was that at Burnley or Blackpool? The reason I ask is that was in the old 1st Division and that season I went to Bloomfield (along with about 10 thousand other Clarets) and got thrown out by a copper for sitting on a mates shoulders. I sneaked back in for the game (I was ejected before the kick off) and got through the game unscathed. But I seem to think it was Boxing Day but I'm not sure. I could be wrong.paulus the woodgnome wrote:Boxing Day 1971. We beat Blackpool 2-1 I think and I seem to recall Dave Thomas playing for us that day.

Burnley 5 v Manchester United 3 FA Cup 3rd Round 1954. I was 9 and went with my Uncle, we were near the top halfway on the Longside and I had to stand on a wooden box to see the game. Happy memories and a supporter ever since. Great times watching the Clarets which have now returned.

Re: First Game Memories
I don't remember my first game very well in terms of who we were playing. I think it would have been around 1996 when Adrian Heath was in charge. I was definitely bribed.
My Dad bought me a Snickers, a Coca Cola and a Burnley shirt. At the time, I was a Liverpool fan and my favourite player was Robbie Fowler. How easily I was converted. If I'd have been a bit older, I'd have at least got a Twix out of the deal as well.

Burnley v Arsenal late 60's 0-0 draw but I was hooked as a 4 or 5 year old. My abiding memory is telling my dad that the man (Peter Mellor) had to fall down to get that one.
My dad can't tell me what season it was but I'd be interested to know if anyone can help.

The game you are referring to was Boxing Day 1972. I was a student at the time and had a mate from Manchester who told me that a friend of his was going to make his debut for Blackpool against us. He did and was sent off. Just can't recall his name.houseboy wrote:Was that at Burnley or Blackpool? Re: First Game Memories
I don’t remember who my first game was against or the score but I was about 5 years old and it would have been around 1979/1980. I was on the Beehole end with my Dad and I wore my claret and blue scarf knitted by my Mum. I had been given the choice of going to the football with my dad or going to the fair with my Auntie and my younger brother, but I chose the football. I can remember looking at the Longside where my Uncle was and remarking to my Dad how noisy it was. I think the away team were in red and I remember getting bored during the second half so I began playing with my scarf, wrapping it around one of the crush barriers. I have tried to work out which game it was but I don’t think I ever will.
Re: First Game Memories
Derby at home in the FA cup the year we won the 4th division, 91/92 season? A 2 all draw, can't remember much about the game apart from a long haired Ted McMinn playing for Derby and I think Conroy equalising for us at the Cricket field end.
