Anybody been skiing in Bulgaria?
Looking to save some money on a ski holiday, we usually go to the French Alps but prices out there are ridiculous. I have a work colleague who's been to Bulgaria and said it was very cheap and good quality skiing with brand new ski lifts etc. My missus isn't convinced and thinks we'll either be attacked or die on a shoddy ski lift. Please help me save some money.......

Skiing there sounds more like a lads skiing resort than family one, but by all accounts the skiing is decent enough.
Went to Kopaonik in Serbia last year (direct flights to Belgrade from Luton) and loved it. Would also be good with the other half. Skiings decent enough, very pictureesque, some amazingly good restaurants on and off the slopes and half the price of Bulgaria.
Was looking at Jahorina in Bosnia this year but short on time so have opted for Sauze Doulx for a long weekend if you have been there and can recommend?

In the early eighties - we landed at Plovdiv and all you could see back then were hundreds of military helicopters. I was detained for an hour because, knob -like, I'd forgotten to sign my new passport.
The hotel was good apart from the daily power cuts and the skiing at Borovets was excellent.
On a day off we visited Sofia - it was like I imagine our 1950s city life to be.

Re: Anybody been skiing in Bulgaria?
A mate of mine has been a few times. Skiing is good, although obviously less extensive (and expensive!) than the Alps, but main drawback is the snow isn’t the most reliable. That was a few years ago though so the snow-making may well have improved since then.
Cricket field - I’m off to Sestriere this year -any tips?

Have a gander a Jested here in Czech Republic. There's a 5* hotel that looks like an upturned golf tea with views out of this world

Have 2 apartments near Pamporovo and have skied there for the last 10 years with the family. Lifts now top class (6 seater), pistes good for beginner & intermediate skiers. Sunniest ski resort in Europe with snow cannon if required (rarely in our experience). Food, beer half the price of France & lots of good local restaurants.

Not been myself. Just asked my mate from out there. Sounds promising.scouseclaret wrote:A mate of mine has been a few times. Sorry CC.- thought you said you’d already been to Sauze which is why I asked. It’s a neighbouring resort to Sestriere on the Milky Way system.

Bansko, Pamporovo & Borovets are all top ski resorts now..Huge changes from years ago but still decent prices. We've already got snow here, but they have plan B's in place now too. Plovdiv is top city nearby..better than Sofia for a trip.

Re: Anybody been skiing in Bulgaria?
Yes been to Borovets. Was good snow, mostly blue runs but enjoyable. Nice tree lined runs. There is an old abandoned ski high jump structure tucked away in the woods. It was falling to piece but I climbed up for a nosey, take my hat off to those who went off them!
The bars were good and it had a club, remember the restaurants and bars being very smokey. We got a real deal for a 4* and ski package.
