Re: Airbnb
Stayed in one in Derbyshire last year which was ace. Right near the peak district, hot tub, huge garden, and an old stables so really traditional. I also stayed jn one in France this year - hat was alright but it was an apartment and some of the others were filled with those bloody student types that sing at the top of their voice at 2am after blowing the top off a shandy. I think airbnb generally has the better options when it comes to places to stay (rather than say booking . com), and the rating/review scheme is useful to find out any to avoid. Maybe there'll be a few pop up round Burnley ready for next season?
Re: Airbnb
Can't think of anything much worse.
Re: Airbnb
Haha arriving to sleep in a stranger’s spare room after 12 pints of bitter, a beef and onion pie, and a chicken jalfrezi.

Re: Airbnb
I stayed in one in Herefordshire a few months ago, and I was pleasantly surprised. I’m used to staying in Premier Inns, Holiday Inns etc 2-3 times per month, and I raised an eyebrow when this was booked for me. Even pulling up to the house I felt a bit awkward as it was a 5 bed house in a cul-de-sac. The guy basically booked out up to 3 of the bedrooms during the week, although there was just me that night, with family joining him at weekends from London.
Anyway, other than having to roam out for evening meal, it was great. A much better room, wifi, coffee facilities than any PI. The bed was amazingly comfortable, and the room could be locked. Also, despite normally keeping to myself at breakfast, having a great chat for 45 mins in the morning over a super breakfast made a refreshing change. I’d definitely recommend, although my nice experience can probably be countered by a poor one somewhere.

I’ve used it 50+ times over the last 5 years but always made sure I had the entire place. Never had any issues and can’t recommend it highly enough.

That’s good news. We’ve booked several Airbnb’s for our trip of a lifetime visit to New Zealand next year. Great to get some recommendations.

Re: Airbnb
Winstonswhite has got the right idea.
You can book a spare room if you want to but it's so much nicer to book the entire place for yourself. It's normally a far better deal than a hotel.

Re: Airbnb
Another positive vote for Airbnb from me.
We've used them all over Europe. It can make a visit to an expensive city a budget break.
(e.g. 2 cheap flights to Paris for less than £100 return, and 3 nights Airbnb for about £100). What's not to like?
Hard to argue against really, since the website and booking system is good, and the reviews are generally very reliable.
(Wife has also frequently used them when working abroad. You can usually get a great deal on (e.g.) a months accommodation for a fraction of the price of a hotel).

Airbnb is great. Used it extensively around the world. Make sure you choose places with plenty of reviews. Think there may be some shysters on there, especially new places with no reviews.

Re: Airbnb
I hate Airbnb (not having a go at anyone who does like it - all about opinions). Short-term rentals through such companies are killing the authenticity of cities like Barcelona. People are turning to renting out to tourists (who are willing to pay more) rather than locals which means there are less long-term rentals on the market. The effect of this is that rental prices shoot up due to the lack of availability and increased demand. Barcelona's city council has had to start regulating this because it has become that much of a problem. It's also a nightmare for neighbours who have their apartment block basically turned into a hotel where people come and go on a daily or weekly basis. If anything, these problems have created something of an anti-tourism sentiment from some which is a shame because Spain really does rely on tourism.

Yeah I’ve used it 4 times in Barcelona and got the impression it’s frowned upon especially in Barcelonetta which appears to still be a normal residential area by the beach.IndigoLake wrote:I hate Airbnb (not having a go at anyone who does like it - all about opinions). That's right! Barceloneta is naturally a popular destination but it's also an area that has been there quite a long time with residents who have lived there all their lives. It was basically a fishing village once upon a time.Winstonswhite wrote:Yeah I’ve used it 4 times in Barcelona and got the impression it’s frowned upon especially in Barcelonetta which appears to still be a normal residential area by the beach.
Re: Airbnb
Has anybody (on here) ever ended up in bed with the hosts/owners of these properties? Or indeed any of the other guests?

There are many problems with Airbnb, but the OP was looking at it from the perspective of a user or potential user, and as a regular user, I'm struggling to think of negatives.IndigoLake wrote:I hate Airbnb (not having a go at anyone who does like it - all about opinions). I think the worst experience we had was when we had exclusive use of a nice house, but we hadn't realised that the bathroom and toilet were on the ground floor whilst the bedroom was upstairs. Hardly a disaster though.

I agree that there are plenty of advantages for the renter (and indeed the owner). Just wanted to provide another perspective from popular cities like Barcelona (I believe Paris has had similar issues) where it can provide problems for locals. I just think it needs to be more heavily regulated, that's all.nil_desperandum wrote:There are many problems with Airbnb, but the OP was looking at it from the perspective of a user or potential user, and as a regular user, I'm struggling to think of negatives.

Re: Airbnb
Airbnb is great if you're renting a whole house/apartment, but I'm not up for renting a bedroom in someone home, unless I had no choice in the matter. I try to avoid B&Bs as well unless there's no other option. I much prefer the anonymity that hotels give you.

I've had both positive and negative experiences of it. Check the reviews of the owner before booking.

Re: Airbnb
Used it several times around Europe to rent apartments as an alternative to a hotel and have generally only had positive experiences. Only word of warning is watch out for the scams. Some people advertise non-existent properties using glam photos from the web and will ask you to leave a deposit by bank transfer. Only ever pay through the integrated system.

Re: Airbnb
I have used it several times in Europe ( Amsterdam, Portugal) and Uk (Devon, Kent, Dales, Pembrokeshire and Hampshire) and as someone who also rents out a whole house all I can say is read the reviews and "try to read between the lines" with regard to bad experiences.
On the whole its pretty good
