Premier League TV rights 2019-2022

Will all be decided today although will probably be next week before it is announced. For the first time it is thought there might not be much of an increase in terms of the money although there will be more games shown.

The packages on offer are:

A: 32 matches - Saturday 12:30 p.m.
B: 32 matches - Saturday 5:30 p.m.
C. 24 matches - Sunday 2 p.m. & 8 matches - Saturday 7:45 p.m.
D. 32 matches - Sunday 4:30 p.m.
E. 24 matches - Monday 8 p.m. or Friday 7:30-8 p.m. & 8 matches - Sunday 2 p.m.
F. All 20 matches from one Bank Holiday and one midweek fixture programme
G. All 20 matches from two midweek fixture programmes

The runners and riders are: Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter & Netflix. The first two are clearly bidding, Amazon are expected to but likely to go for the midweek packages. The other three are less likely to be involved.

These have been the values of the TV deals previously

1992-1997 - £0.191 bn
1997-2001 - £0.67 bn
2001-2004 - £1.2 bn
2004-2007 - £1.024 bn (the only occasion it has gone down)
2007-2010 - £1.706 bn
2010-2013 - £1.773 bn
2013-2016 - £3.018 bn
2016-2019 - £5.136 bn

The number of games on offer is increased by c 20% to 200 (more than half of all matches!) but there may not be much of a price increase because there probably won't be much concrete interest outside of Sky & BT (fb, google, netflix all rumoured to have not bid) + BT is possibly a bit cooler nowadays.
MotD is paying c 3% more for it's just renewed deal and Sky/BT may not run much more than that -even with all those extra matches.

Plenty of extra £££ to be earned outside UK though, a new deal with China from 2019/20 for £564m over 3 years is (I think) almost 10X what it was. NBC also signed a new big USA deal recently for 2019/20 onwards for 3 years. So even if UK income stalls a bit, there'll be more dosh swimming around 2019 onwards to keep the players in RR/Bentley/Lambos etc.

I think so. I'm sure I read last year that from the new deal all midweek games would be screened.

It does - they are going to add a Bank Holiday as well as the three midweek games we have and show the lot. It seems these are the packages that might interest Amazon the most.

My methods of going on radio silence and watch the full match replay on Clarets Player the day after has required discipline, but has worked fine. Hardest part has been locating.the replay thumbnail while squinting at the screen to avoid seeing all the other thumbnails that would give the result away....

Hope NBC get the USA rights. Coverage is excellent and inexpensive, but no doubt the price will rise.

This auction is just for UK. I believe NBC has the USA deal already taking it up to 2021/2.

If Amazon truly want to get into this in a big way they would blow Sky out of the water. It’s only a matter of time. Amazon are growing massively, despite already being huge and cash rich, and aren’t reliant on other TV package deals to make it work. They also own 2/3 of the worlds data cloud on top of their online shopping sites and distribution facilities.

Just listening to Talksport whilst eating my tea and they said that for the midweek games you can choose which one to watch, like you can with Champions league games at present.

That changes things a bit.

If they're successful and we're still in the premier league then not much choice is there. Or do you feel that strongly that you'd boycott.

I believe they own Twitch too which is a live streaming app where millions of people daily watch others play game consoles/PC.

Is that for the PL games though? I thought it was just midweek Championship games?

Honestly I'm not certain BUT I assumed it was PL.

Either way it makes it an attractive option to have if you've got Sky Sports for example.

I seem to remember when whichever commission said that it was bad for football fans with only sky showing the games. They said competition would bring the price down for the fan. Never understood how that would work. In a bidding battle the price is only going to go up. All that as happened is players have got richer, fans have got poorer.

Tax avoiding companies? Why should I lose sleep when there is nothing I can do to ever make a difference? I suspect millions of others are like me so there is never going to be a mass boycott of Amazon, Starbucks et al.

There are people at the Parliamentary trough paid good money to see to matters like that and then thousands of Government employees paid to follow it through.

If I want to watch a specific game I'm not attending I don't care who has the broadcasting rights.

Now people like myself with the full Sky Sports package have to pay a fortune on top just to get BT Sports which I refuse to get so I have to miss all Champions League games, FA Cup games plus games like the North London derby today. When I was with Virgin I got BT Sports for free, I believe it's about £360 a year to add BT Sports channels to Sky package. I miss the Champions League on ITV, I have no idea if they have a chance of getting back any rights.

I certainly wouldn't be interested... I only have it because its free with my Broadband

Wish they'd have given up - Sky might have the monopoly on it but at least you'll only be paying once, not twice/three times.

Seems BT have the rights until 2021.

I'll bet they're looking for a way out of it though. They paid WAAAAAAAAAAY too much for it. It must be killing them.

I might be in the minority here, but I've found watching the highlights on ITV (on tomorrow night) fine.

BT Sport will have to get a much bigger share of the football, and improve their commentary and pundits before I considered paying for it. If they got rid of Michael Owen, that would be a step in the right direction.

The highlights are great on ITV but by the time it's on the following day I've seen the result/goals already from somewhere else so it spoils it and there's nothing like watching a live game. If Burnley get into EL next year, i'd wilt and buy BT.
