I was delighted when I heard Liverpool were in for Virgil Van Dijk. I said to him, “Your grandad, Dick, will be beaming with pride. And he was a cracking sweeper in his day.”

Kevin Keegan was my hero before I went on my first Burnley game in 1975.My first BFC Idol was Tony Morley. I remember vaguely as a 9 year old that not many other fans seemed to rate him. He was in and out of the side but went on to greater things.

Keegan was an incredible footballer, he had to contend with a lot of nonsense through his career though, numerous players and pundits suggesting he was never really top drawer, and that he was only successful because he put in the hours training. Comparisons to Best were commonplace, but the prevailing viewpoint was that where Keegan had little natural talent, Best was truly gifted, and a footballing genius.
I disagreed then, and with hindsight still do, His partnership with toshack was spectacular, his craft and flair were obvious.
Long shots, headers, amazing goalbound runs, dribbling. Only 5'7" tall, but an amazing athlete.
The European successes, footballer of the year. Easily world class, put up against any generation.

Nasty fall on Superstars.

Brian Jacks' dips and squats were outstanding.

Martin Keown firmly believes the world will end in the year 2000. Brilliant

Very similar style to the 'NotBigSam' account but a little less sweary. I wonder if its the same guy but he hopes to target a more mainstream audience?

Saying that Sterling would have tried to sit on the bike a missed the saddle completely :D

Kevin Keegan was a great player. He may not have possessed the natural attributes of Dalglish but IMO he is Liverpool's greatest player.

Only seen clips of him but reminded me of Peter Beardsley, is that fair to say?

Beardsley himself was amazing. And I only saw him in his later years. Some of the stuff he did was Messi like. But on muddy pitches with tough tacklers!

Personally I think Kenny Daglish was better than Keegan but KK was definitely a great player.

It was a big surprise when he left Liverpool to sign for Hamburg - it was one of the first time I remember an English player doing this. The fact that he was so successful for Hamburg and won the European player of the year proved what a good player he was.

He not only had a great partnership with Toshack for Liverpool but also with Brooking for England. Remember him being injured in the build up for 1982 World Cup and then bringing him and Brooking on for the game against Spain they needed to win. They only came on with 15 / 20 mins to go I think and Keegan missed a sitter of a header from a Brooking cross.

Even when he came back and played for Southampton he was still brilliant.

He was about the same size as Peter Beardsley but from what I remember they were different types of players. Beardo was a fantastic player but not sure whether he was ever the main man in a team like Keegan and Daglish. Keegan was more explosive than Beardo and a better goal scorer. Can`t remember him being a big dribbler - he had pace and seemed to just get on the end of a lot of knock ons before anyone else. He was great in forming partnerships with - as was Beardo to be fair.

Reading on here about how Dobbo's Dad recommended his son to Harry Potts reminded me of my only letter to Harry Potts to tell him of a certain Kevin Keegan who at that time played for Scunthorpe Utd who I used to watch periodically although always a Burnley fan. Even a person as modest as me could spot the talent and potential of Kevin Keegan. I never got a reply and Keegan signed for Liverpool not long after my letter (for £30.000 I think.)
Had Harry Potts only taken my advice then Keegan would have become Burnley player.

I know that his outburst during their battle for the title with Man.Utd. all those years ago has generally been held up as an example of a manager “losing it” and has been shown time and time again. My thoughts at the time were that he was being real and actually showing a bit of passion rather than the bland policitian like responses we got from most managers then and we continue to get now!

100% although I think Fergie had his number. Certainly not the only one mind.

Good player in his day, certainly him and Toshack together were. Always remember the charity shield bust up with Bremner. As a manager showed his feelings too much and people like fergie took advantage of him.

I have a distant memory that when playing for Newcastle in the 80s at the Turf he ended up in a heap on the floor after being hit by something chucked from the Longside.
