NME R.I.P
Print edition of the Iconic magazine will be its last this week.

Sad news about the NME.
Back in the day I used to keep mine in a pile near my bed, just in front of my American sitcom DVDs.
I'd keep my friends close, and my NME's closer.

Read it til 1976, then switched to Sniffin' Glue.
The "punk bible".
Pity that only lasted 12 issues.

Used to love doing the crossword in the office in the late 60's early 70's - nearly everybody
got involved.
Wouldn't have a Scooby with today's crossword (if there is one, that is)

Also, used to buy "Sounds" back in the day and do that crossword too. Great times
for music.
for music.
Re: NME R.I.P
Was the number one for music news in the 60s. Melody Maker a poor second.

Had some great music journalists once.
Transformed into a slightly edgier smash hits a few years ago, or maybe just me getting older.

Used to read mine in bed to help me drift off.
Guess they'll be no more sleeping with the NME.

Re: NME R.I.P
I used to get it in the early to mid 1970s. The NME, Melody and Sounds were the choices - Sounds was a bit commercial I thought, MM seemed more for musicians.
It took me a long time before I grasped that NME is 'enemy'!
To be truthful I found the journalists pompous and up their own arse most of the time, seemingly just having got a degree in English and foisting their new found 'skills' on us readers. They also had articles that had nothing directly to do with music, often political.
Still you could extract from all this musical information. I could never do the crossword.

Re: NME R.I.P
Sadly the whole of print media seems to be slowly disappearing.
I did NME back in the day and Melody Maker.
My favourite for a long time was 'Disc and Music Echo' [editor: Penny Valentine]
and after that 'Blues and Soul' [both on subscription, and both a good read]...I haven't read any of them for a while.
**some great adverts in the Classified Ads back then..some kid in Moscow asking for someone to send him a copy of 'Sergeant Pepper' or 'Beggar's Banquet'..and some spotty teenager in Prague desperate for someone to send him a pair of worn Levi/Wrangler jeans. It was a different world altogether.

You wonder if they were not some thinly veiled messages from spies. Certainly even now some ad's in the back of Private eye cause some head scratchinghampsteadclaret wrote:Sadly the whole of print media seems to be slowly disappearing.

Soon only free press will exist, as online becomes the norm.
