Sunday Times.. Best places to live
Ramsbottom, Skipton and the Ribble Valley all listed...
It was remarked to me by friends who came up to visit for the weekend ( Watford fans, just back from 6 years working in Hong Kong ), that if you've a job that pays good money, and you're not susceptable to rust, that Burnley, with it's transport links and low housing costs, would be a fabulous place to live..
My friend went on the Turf, whilst his partner wandered into town and she came back clutching an Estate Agent's details for a 3 story Townhouse property in Lowerhouse valued at around £185k. " This is virtually the same as our house, that we've just bought for £795k ! "..

Clitheroe born and bred, still live here but I feel that the ridiculous amount of new housing being built is spoiling the town (and surrounding villages). Looking to move away long term.

The first time I took my wife to the North she pointed out the sign that said Clit-Heroe. Would pick Skipton out of the three. Better rail links. Nicer town. Better surroundings. And more going on.
Clitheroe never really done it for me.
We arent in a bad spot really. Premier league club. Nice surroundings. Great links. Cheap houses all make up for the **** town centre and lack of anything going on in the town itself.

Was on a training course a few years back and a lad from Stockport asked where I was from then laughed.halfmanhalfbiscuit wrote:The first time I took my wife to the North she pointed out the sign that said Clit-Heroe. I'd never noticed it before.
Turned out he had a best mate who they nicknamed Clit Hero as he was from Clitheroe and had a tattoo on his foot with "Clit Hero" after a drunken trip to the tattoo artist whilst drunk on holiday.

Re: Sunday Times.. Best places to live
you might be able to buy comparatively cheap up north, but whilst the house might be fine, the area could be going to the dogs around it.
No point having a cheap mortgage, and living in a run down area with potentially high crime and crappy neighbours causing issues day and night.

Or you could buy cheap - save plenty of money and live a decent life and then buy a better house ..... rather than being lumbered with a 5/6/700k mortgage from a young age.Wile E Coyote wrote:you might be able to buy comparatively cheap up north, but whilst the house might be fine, the area could be going to the dogs around it.

They’ll be the talk of Watford with all the tales of their voyage to the north. And with an estate agent’s brochure as primary evidence.

I've looked at buying a house up north to rent out and whilst there are some ridiculously cheap ones in the Burnley area, I already know Piccadilly road isn't the nicest place in the world.
Re: Sunday Times.. Best places to live
Plenty of nice places to live in the area with plenty of nice surroundings. You could spend a fortune to live in a house of the same size in London which in my option is awful to live and work in for any length of time. There are other nice areas though without the sub cultures. The key point in the post though is the work factor.

Pimlico, not sure if I know you but I was born and bred also in Clitheroe but have been away for quite a long time. Came back last March and, to be honest, what they are doing to the town is killing it. They are planning another 355 houses down by the cemetary and have a quota of about another 1000 in the next 2 years....Pimlico_Claret wrote:Clitheroe born and bred, still live here but I feel that the ridiculous amount of new housing being built is spoiling the town (and surrounding villages). Newspapers do these lists every now and then so think it all boils down to what we all like individually.

Apologies all around, here's a sorry there's a sorry everybody have a sorry.
Re: Sunday Times.. Best places to live
If you want to build one house it can be an uphill battle. If you are a developer and want to mass build in a village or small town and completely change iits profile and strain its resources you're in. I'm sure there's a lot of scratching each other's backs with planners and developers.

Think I’m right in saying Government changes to planning law has made it easier to build on greenfield sites, also financial penalties put onto Councils national wide.

Just to clarify, the " OP " has lived happily in Burnley in the same house for the last 20 years.... Mrs Clarets4me and I are now semi-retired, and share our home with 2 Adults who live with severe Learning disabilities for whom we provide 24/7 care, under Lancashire County Council's " Shared Lives " scheme...Diesel wrote:What's happening here is the op is desperate to tell us how much his new house has just cost him without him looking like a bragging pillock.

Re: Sunday Times.. Best places to live
I agree York is a nice place to live - its improved a lot since I moved here about 15 years ago. As with any town or city it does have its drawbacks - too much traffic is my pet hate. I live in a village about 8 miles north of York which ideal. House prices have gone through the roof - if anything comes up for sale its gone in less than 2 weeks.
There's a real shortage of houses for sale in York - any available are ridiculously priced.

If you live in a nice part of the world, the house prices are going through the roof.
Village I live in as three different housing developments going on.
Increase in school sizes in the area, especially secondary? Nothing

Skipton, simply because I love the drinking spots provided by Market Towns, and love The Dales.
As I stated in the Sunderland thread, there are lots of wonderful places to live around Burnley if you have the vision.

Some of the leafiest of leafy places can hide a multitude of sins.
Re: Sunday Times.. Best places to live
This is true. I live in Padiham which has so much going for it on the face of it - great transport links, decent local businesses, nice walks along the greenway, down Gawthorpe or along the Calder which is just behind my house. What lets it down massively is some of the utter morons knocking about. Since we moved in 6 years ago we've been broken into and my wife was shouted at by two pi55 heads and called a c*** on the street at 9AM on a Saturday!cricketfieldclarets wrote:The problem with burnley is youre never more than 5 mins from a shithole, druggys and knobheads.
