NZ v England, 1st Test

Post by TheFamilyCat » Thu Mar 22, 2018 6:57 am

Just woke up and checked the score.

England 58 all out. What the ****?

Anyone been watching? What was going on?

Same here, just turned Sky on and had to look trice at England's score. An absolute shambles of an innings. Difficult to believe Root will last much longer as captain and I for one was very surprised when he got it in the first place.

If not Root, who else?
Abject batting nevertheless. They have forgotten how to play 5 day test cricket.

20/20 and ODI cricket is fine and brings in crowds, especially on the sub continent, but players are not being brought up able to play a proper test match innings or to be able to play a "longer game". It's all about bish, bash, bosh and if you let 3 balls go or defend a couple, you're out the team.

We look lost and like we don't want to be playing there.

We were 23/7 when I went to bed so I was relieved to see we’d got as many as 58 when I switched on this morning. The batting was dreadful.

With the money that's on offer to play 20/20 cricket it's no real surprise that Test match cricket has taken a back seat.

Shambles is correct how come the Kiwis can build a decent score.
Pitch was blameless just abject batting Overton and Jimmy apart.
Can't see how England can escape with a draw from here.

Seeing as the innings lasted just 20 overs, it doesn't look like the 20/20 practice is doing them any good either!

To be fair, we lasted more than 20 overs - it was 20.4 :D

Trevor Bayliss said the England batting collapse was not anticipated and had come like "a Boult out of the blue".

I'm not sure how you do anticipate that, not even with our record of collapses.

Newlands Lunch - South Africa are 75 for 1 vs Australia.
Good to know some teams still know how to play test match cricket.

Trent Boult and Tim Southee are superb bowlers, and we won't eves see Root, Stokes, Bairstow and Ali get a combined zero ever again. Two very well matched teams and before the start we were marginal favourites.

Let's put it down to an off morning and appreciate a brilliant bowling performance.

And congrats to Stuart Broad on getting his 400. Great effort.
