Closing the gap
'We'll never play you again' is heard a lot at this time of the year on many football grounds especially if the two clubs playing are rivals or close neighbours.(Having said that a sparse Arsenal crowd were singing it to an even sparser Stoke contingent on Sunday). Anyway. it's not that long ago when Southampton and Portsmouth were world's apart on and off the pitch but for a few weeks now I've been watching with growing interest at the possibility of these two clubs perhaps 'playing' each other again.
Bitter sweet yesterday with Wigan losing at Portsmouth but that's three consecutive victories for Pompey after an indifferent set of results and they are right in the play-off mix currently. Just checked the thread on 'who'll go down from the Prem and Southampton get a lot of mentions. Still a lot of football to be played yet of course but I wonder if Portsmouth fans are seeing an opportunity to ram the words of that song back down Southampton throats. Something I'm keeping an eye on over the next few weeks.

Yep and only 10 years since portsmouth won the fa cup and southampton finished 20th in the championship. Portsmouth survived again the year after as southampton went to league 1.
We in 7th and Blackburn in League 1 looks a massive gap. In reality its nothing at all money aside.

At the end of next season its entirely possible we are premier league and you drop into the championship..Dyched wrote:Yep and only 10 years since portsmouth won the fa cup and southampton finished 20th in the championship. Portsmouth survived again the year after as southampton went to league 1.

Are you a betting man Paxo? Reckon you'd get some very favourable odds on that.Saxoman wrote:At the end of next season its entirely possible we are premier league and you drop into the championship..

It's also possible that at the end of next season Blackburn will be heading to the fourth tier.Saxoman wrote:Likely? No. Possible? Yes.

This is about rivalry in another part of the country. Shouldn't have bothered really.Saxoman wrote:At the end of next season its entirely possible we are premier league and you drop into the championship..

Re: Closing the gap
Constant change of managers and selling off their best players wasn't going to end well for Saints.
Chuck in their misfiring strikers and I'm not surprised they're struggling.
I think Austin is still their leading scorer and he was out injured for months.
Credit to Portsmouth for turning themselves around after becoming a joke of a club.

Re: Closing the gap
Pompey still fill there ground every week, even when in league 2 .. For that alone I hope they get back to the championship
Re: Closing the gap
I met a Pompey fan on holiday once who kept thinking we were from Barnsley, despite me continuously telling him differently. Granted this was back in the early 90's when we were still boing boinging between what is now the Championship and League 1. Annoying all the same. Would love them to come up at Rovers' expense in the Play Offs.

Re: Closing the gap
The possibility of these two clubs meeting next season gathered a little more pace this weekend.
