Re: Sardine dilemma
They'll be fine i think, tinned stuff doesn't go off for years really, its probably just recommending the taste will be at its best before that date.
Im no scientist, but i would imagine they could be edible in another 100 years.

I have had an official 8lb loss this week and it wasn't due to eating healthily.
Bin 'em or prepare for an uncomfortable few days at minimum

But as Peter Pan said, to die would be an awfully big adventure.Steve1956 wrote:I think I'll give them a miss,I might die and miss out European adventure

Eat them, unless they smell funny (well, funnier than usual) or are a funny colour. Or go out and buy a new tin, if money's no object.

Re: Sardine dilemma
No - the motto is: if it looks okay and smells okay it's okay. My record was for some brown sauce a few years ago, I looked on the bottle (I don't use it too often as you might guess and no-one else ever did) and the use by date was over two years before (and yes I had already used it). Needless to say I'm still here to tell the tale.Longside4evr wrote:I look at it this way the moto goes "If in doubt chuck it out"
To be honest I don't think I have ever been ill off food other than many years ago in morocco when I had food poisoning caused by, of all things, salad. I'd stayed clear of much of the meat which hung out in the open and was subject to flies and other such things but forgot about the salad which was washed in the very same water that you couldn't drink. Stupid mistake. It was in the days before Morocco became much of a holiday place (yes, I was on the 'hippy' trail) and living in a tent is not great when you're that ill.

Re: Sardine dilemma
If the sell by is 2017you probably bought them in 2010 as they usually keep for 7-8 years in a tin.
The issue is not how long over they are but when you would normally have eaten something you bought 8 years ago. Given a new tin will cost about 80p I wouldn't risk it!!

No idea mate but I had a worse dose 16 months ago, Campylobacter and it lasted about 2 weeks, ended up in A&E.Steve1956 wrote:Out of date sardines?
That was almost definitely from tinned Salmon so I just wouldn't risk it with fish.

Last week I had some John West tinned kipper fillets on toast. Absolutely delicious. Best before December 2016. No side effects as yet.

That's a disappointment. I opened this thread thinking we'd been linked with an exciting up and coming Italian player called Sardine Di Lemma.

It's only a best before date, for something that was probs my caught in the last decade.
If was me if eat It, unless it smelled funny or looked funny, but it's sadines which smell and look funny anyhow.
If the worst happens then get on over to the weight loss thread afterwards.

Re: Sardine dilemma
just be careful of getting that bacteriasardinius. nasty affliction which does include rapid weight loss and increased buying of air freshener.
Re: Sardine dilemma
There is a difference between Best Before dates and Use By dates, as stated above, if something has a good few years shelf life then another year or two won`t matter.
But then again you are taking advice from someone who bought his mate a hazelnut yoghurt when they were pulled off the shelves due to a botulism outbreak in 89
