Dealing with the wife
The European tour looks well and truly on.
I watched my first game in 1987 (after Orient so I missed the very worst) and it has been my dream to watch Burnley in Europe.
However, happening now is the worst possible time. I have just had to take a pay cut to avoid being made redundant and having recently become a parent, money is tight.
I have yet to discuss following Burnley in Europe with the wife but I need to do this sometime soon.
Is it acceptable to just tell her that I'm going and threaten her with divorce if she dissents?

I’ve already told Mrs W - even if it’s just one game
She goes away every year to Tenerife with her friends so I have a bit of catching up to do

Worst case scenario....you get to see European teams at Turf Moor and can watch the other games on tv.
Alternatively, Take on a second job just to pay for your travel?

Re: Dealing with the wife
My one hope is that we get drawn somewhere she'd quite like to go herself and make a break of it. I'm sure she could occupy herself while I go on the game (looking after the boy would probably keep her busy, although I'd be tempted to take him even if he slept through the game just so he could say he was there).

I spoke with my Mrs about it last week.
She pulled her face at first but quickly came around when I explained what a big deal it is.
You have a couple of months to save up. Just cut back on any usual treats in the meantime

Absolutely. There no reason to spend money on treats for her if you need to save for things like flights to and from Burnley games.

It'll be worth it to also remind your kids that there'll be another Christmas next year.

Re: Dealing with the wife
When I first met my wife, who’s a Southerner, I told her within two minutes where I was from.
Being from Burnley is one of my fundamental features.
We spoke of the potential European away day this week, and she reminded of me of us holding hands once whilst listening to a detuned radio in a car-park. I can’t remember the exact game. Probably away at Torquey or Hartlepool.
I think she’d consider it an insult if I didn’t make the trip.
Why worry about all that other stuff in the dark days and then let a European game pass you by?

Tell her that since money is short, it may be best to move somewhere cheaper. You will go and check out a few places for her...TheFamilyCat wrote:The European tour looks well and truly on.

Wednesday afternoon............
Pops off to the shop........... walks back in the house at Friday dinnertime.
I'm just off to the shop love, for some bread and milk
We don't need any bread and milk
I know, but I fancy a reet big bread and butter pudding

Little lad goes to grandparents, you fly out Thursday morning, watch the match, and have a long romantic weekend Friday to Sunday. Preferably in a nearby city, not in the home of the team who we've just tonked!

Mrs Mbanga has agreed on a European tour with her and young miss Mbanga going shopping in said city and me and Master Mbanga watching the football.
Sell it as a city break boys.

Re: Dealing with the wife
Already posted on the match thread - took my "Mrs W" shopping for two new chairs this afternoon. Followed the game via the match thread etc. She shared my excitement when we went 1-0 ahead and again when it was 2-0.
I told her we'd probably be in Europa League next season when we'd won the game - and suggested she'd like a w/end away in Europe, travelling out on Thursday morning.
I started "going on" regularly in 67/68 season. I didn't think I'd have to wait so long to be in Europe again.

My wife has had a two day trip to Paris and potentially another one in September to Copenhagen with work. I’m taking days off work to do a bit of childcare whilst mentally banking these trips for future discussions

Spare a thought for those who babies due when the first matches are pencilled in

Re: Dealing with the wife
I’ve been telling the Mrs after every win from end of November and today she’s finally accepted the inevitable. She’s trying to get some clothes out of me but I’m resisting (might need to use that later in the campaign). I’ve gone down the line that I’ve paid for the family holiday for the four of us so a little treat on myself is acceptable.

I havnt read the whole thread but I'm going whether my wife likes it or not. I would rather be divorced than not go if it comes to that. These times may come once in a generation if you are lucky and you could be dead in a year.

Briefed the wife weeks ago. Been working overtime and saving. Child due in October but it’s the second, this could be our only time in Europe in my lifetime.
My exact words were “ I have been a Burnley fan longer than I have been married to you”.

That might be all you need if we do a west ham and get knocked out by some 'Romanian peasant farmers' at the first hurdle.Lancasterclaret wrote:I think I'll get away with one.

that guy ranting on west ham tv about it (dom?) was the funniest football rant I'd seen for ages - particular''ly when he pointed out that it was the same bunch of rpfs that had knocked them out the previous year that they had just capitulated to. It made his ire at losing to f ing Burnley Dead mild.

I'll certainly try and get to at least one of the games should we qualify - I'll regret it if I don't. I'm lucky that my wife is cool about such things - she's off to Ireland in a few weeks with one of her friends so like wilks_bfc I have a bit of catching up to do!

Re: Dealing with the wife
We’re going on holiday at the end of June / early July. I have already told her not to wash and iron our holiday clothes straight away when we get back. That way she will have something to keep her occupied for our first games.

Re: Dealing with the wife
I drunkenly messaged the missus after the game whilst in the pub saying "off to Europe" - she replied with "I know, I've been looking for flights for you earlier but couldn't remember what dates you said"
Think this is a sign of potential marriage material
When I told her I didn't know where in Europe we'd actually be playing so couldn't book flights yet ...... "you've just been saying Kazakhstan for weeks"

“We could do some European city breaks next season, love.”
“Ooh where are we going?”
“Well depends if we make the Europa League”
“*expletives*”
Edit: I should add she’s a Leicester fan, perhaps this wasn’t the best time to broach the subject

On a serious note, anyone that even has to justify it is with the wrong woman (or man)...
The only dilemma I have got is that my best mate gets married the day before the first qualifier. Hoping thats at home. If its away he knows I will come to the next one

The goalposts may have shifted a bit at my end.
While out walking yesterday, the missus had to take a feral wee. Sensing an opportunity I took a few photos.
She's a keen Instagram user; would it be wrong to threaten her with posting the photos of her mid-wee?
