Dont know if its instructions. But against a team of slow full backs we have absolutely zero width. Lennon should be taking this to them

He's been good for us so I'm not dissing him but Thursday and 1st half he's been well short(no pun intended) and the bigger boys have bullied him.

Lennon’s has a few poor games recently. Needs to look after the ball more and improve his delivery.

I noticed that our wingers, especially Lennon, quite often pull the opposing player inside to create space for Ward and Lowton to get down the wing. This has been working well all season - think about Ward’s goal against Chelsea. He was able to get in down the left completely unchallenged. It also makes space for the quick ball down the line to the strikers - think Lowton’s wonder ball for Barnes against Everton (?).

Can’t believe more hasn’t been made of this - mind you the punditry on Burnley is pretty one dimensional.

Lad i was with at the game did mention thats what he wqs doing yesterday. So a fair observation.

They were going inside to create space. It was just a lot of the time neither Ward nor Lowton overlapped or was in a position to overlap, particularly in the first half.

It is also a function of us moving back to 442 - we keep the wide players narrower to help us keep control of midfield. Whenever we've played 442 it's been to the detriment of the wide players, who have had to sacrifice themselves a bit. It doesn't help when we struggle to control the midfield, as against Watford, Leicester and Chelsea, and by all accounts the first half yesterday.

The narrower you play, the more solid you are in defense. That is one of the reasons why we regularly make statistics for blocks and have managed to hold on in so many games.

Sadly it means we are less effective in attack.

This is exactly why both AL and JBG tucked in. A few people near us yesterday were going ballistic at them for not giving us width but they were doing their job correctly in our system. It gives the opposition defense a lot to think about as our strikers can either move wide for balls down the wing or, as stated, our full backs get forward and put some great crosses in. It works pretty well I think.
