An excellent campaign from an essential unknown quantity of a team and manager. Gives us hope for the future.

Went as per usual....scraped past a few dross teams and one average team...hammered the mighty Panama...and beaten by the only 2 good teams we played.
Utterly over hyped...but it will have sold plenty of ale.

Plus from me. Southgate a 9 for getting results and building a squad mentality. We still lack class at the sharp end but the future is bright.

I'm with you on that. A big yes!Rick_Muller wrote:Yes from me - reignited my desire for England to do well, before the tournament I really couldn't have cared less.
Re: England .. A vote.
Happy. They did better than I expected. Delighted for Trippier who was outstanding. It's generally a young team but there are still a few positions that can be improved upon.
Re: England .. A vote.
Can i vote even though I'm not English?
I'd be happy with that as an England fan. Your performances left me conflicted. I'm genuinely not looking forward tor the final as much as I would have been had you made it through.

You’re right in terms of who we played but we still exceeded expectations and it has felt as though great strides have been taken in reuniting England with the fans and media.fatboy47 wrote:Went as per usual....scraped past a few dross teams and one average team...hammered the mighty Panama...and beaten by the only 2 good teams we played.

If we use Dyche as an example, it’s about everyone pulling in the same direction and for me at least, there are promising signs for the future.
Southgate has done a good job. He’s plenty to learn I’m sure but this has been a positive World Cup.

Overachieved so a huge success.
Re: England .. A vote.
Yes got further than anyone expected but at the end of the day we beat one decent team in open play. Think many are getting far too carried away.

Re: England .. A vote.
We did ok but again I think it just cements us as an average “Championship” standard side in world football.
The biggest positive was we seemed to have a system that everyone knew what they were supposed to be doing- they just fell a bit short.
We’ll do well to not get relegated in this new European League of Nations thingy this autumn.

Very pleased although disappointed that we never put the game “to bed” in the first half. Very optimistic for the future with the likes of Sessegnon, Foden etc likely to breakthrough for the Euro’s.
Actually thinking of getting tickets for the England v Spain or England v Croatia games that are coming up.

Re: England .. A vote.
They were excellent.
Dont count the belgium game as clearly a deafeat eith our second string was acgually a better result as ut meant we played colombia sweden croatia. Rather than Japan brazil France. So i wouldnt read anything into that.
Last night was always going to be harder than everyone expected. Croatia are a very good side. Extra times almost as much of a lottery as penalties.
We shouldve won. We didnt. But they still did bloody well.
Good as well to see so many people accross country enjoying it united. Many of whom probably fell out with england ten years ago.
Southgate should be proud of himself and his players.

Loved it , young talented side , ok we did overachieve and after Tunisia were stupidly overhyped and got beat in our first real 50/50 game , onto the euros and hopefully become real contenders

Re: England .. A vote.
I think I know why Southgate has spent so much time at Turf Moor, it's not only watching our players, its to emulate our ethos and to learn with Sean Dyche. I am sure they will share ideas when he visits, I could see that in everything to do with England off the pitch - on the pitch it will be different as both managers have different types of player at their disposal, but off the pitch - the honesty and integrity that Southgate has projected I think will have been learnt from Dyche.DCWat wrote:If we use Dyche as an example, it’s about everyone pulling in the same direction and for me at least, there are promising signs for the future.

Re: England .. A vote.
A resounding success not necessarily for the performances and getting to the semis although that was excellent but for reigniting old fogeys such as myself passion for the international game. I fell out with England I think it was in 2008 after Croatia beat us 3-2 really haven’t cared much about anything England have done since and until now. I think the way they have conducted themselves and the way they have spoken and been managed has been exceptional a total revelation on what has happened in the past. A huge well done to them all but especially Southgate.

Re: England .. A vote.
That just about sums it up for me, although Southgate deserves credit for getting the best out of a pretty average group of players. Still, regret that they couldn’t score a second when they were well on top. Croatia are a decent side, but still not the calibre of opponent you would expect to meet in the quarter final of the World Cup.fatboy47 wrote:Went as per usual....scraped past a few dross teams and one average team...hammered the mighty Panama...and beaten by the only 2 good teams we played.

At least there seems, at last, to be a long term plan for the England team for the first time in a long time - just a shame that most of the promising youngsters will never see the light of day at their clubs.
As for re-engaging with the fans - great, but let’s see if that lasts beyond the start of the new season!
Re: England .. A vote.
Yeah a great missed opportunity in the semi which is not likely to be on offer again in my life time...

great set of lads, cringeworthy media stuff about southgate, but ultimately beaten yet again, by footballing minnows who were much fitter which is worrying, as it wasnt just down to ability.

Re: England .. A vote.
Very happy.
Pre-tournament all I wanted to see was them trying their best. We knew the current crop of players can't compare with the best sides in the world but so long as they went out fighting with a lot of heart I'd have been happy, and that is what has happened.
Better than that, there are no egos, no prima donnas, no evidence of cliques or issues within the squad. They look like a proper team, and I've actually fallen back in love with them a bit after a few years of a side that looked a lot of the time like they couldn't give a toss about the shirt.

Flattered to deceive, didn't beat anyone above us in the rankings, most of the goals were from set pieces. We looked clueless once Croatia pressed us high up the pitch and we reverted to long balls.

seems to be a lot of this opinion about, along with the good old 'they were there for the taking' from the likes of danny baker.scouseclaret wrote:Croatia are a decent side, but still not the calibre of opponent you would expect to meet in the quarter final of the World Cup.
croatia are an excellent side; skillful, powerful, solid and tactically very aware. they have vastly experienced players who have won titles in different countries and 3 players who have 6 champions league wins between them.
13 of their players played at the last world cup.
they are exactly the calibre of opponent you'd expect to meet at this stage of the tournament.
england very much aren't - yet.

They have a side which has a midfield consisting of a Barcelona 2 Real Madrid, 2 Inter Milan players. Most of them key players at their respective clubs.
Thats behind a Juventus striker. And in front of a defence including Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and AC Milan players.
They have a phenomenal team. Vastly underrated by many.
Its hard to call between who is best. We probably edge it. But the quality of their midfield was always going to be a major factor in how the game was decided.

Re: England .. A vote.
I'll go with the majority. Excellent performance from a team that would have got praise if we'd reached the quarters. I know that we didn't play much but that's not our fault and against Sweden we were just brilliant. My only criticism would be the continued use of Sterling, I don't know what he eats at City but he forgot to pack it to the WC. Surely Rashford or Vardy starting would have been better. It's about 35 games without a goal for England, that is worse than shocking for a striker.
The foundations are there for a very bright future as the team are young enough to grow together, all we need really is a creative midfielder as we are not great in that area, too much of the second half last night was hoofball. I feel sorry for Pope (and Heaton) though because on the showing of this world cup Pickford has made that shirt his own and it is his to lose now.
Our player of the tournament? Trippier (and I'm not just saying that as an ex Claret).

Good to see the old English bulldog spirit is alive and well. Content in not winning, but happy by Jove that we did well.

Re: England .. A vote.
Not happy.......We beat Tunisia, Panama, Sweden...struggled to get past Colombia on pens & lost to Belgium and Croatia. Won 3 drawn 1 lost 2.
There was never an easier route to a final. I thought the football was largely ok but we gave away possession of the ball way to often and easily, England created few chances in open play and looked dodgy at the back.
Overall I'm really disappointed. Under par given the teams we faced (IMO)
Plus side was the keeper and Trippier.

Said at the start I'd be happy with QF so delighted with a SF and a penalty shootout win.
