Yes saw him many times, a crowd favourite in the championship winning side 59/60.
Possibly on the light side for a centre forward but scored goals in a forward line full of 'em.

Simply outstanding player and a player who would fit into today's game brilliantly. Great goalscorer, no one has more post-war goals for us than Ray, but above that his work rate was phenomenal. He'd chase seemingly lost causes all day long. I bet if you speak to those he played alongside up front they'd all shower him with praise.

Well, I had exactly the same blond hair when I was young and was also quite a prolific goalscorer in my time :P

Bringing tears to the eyes thinking about Ray 'The Blond bombshell' Pointer. Great player, who should have played many more times for England. Why he didn't I suppose the only person who could have answered that was Walter Winterbottom. Played for us at a time when some will be surprised to hear, we played great 'edge of the seat football', for which we became renowned, even in months when the pitches were quagmires.

Yes - he was a great goal-scorer for us and, as others have commented, worked his socks off.
My mum had no interest in football, but she liked Ray Pointer. She would have been jealous of your mum, belgianclaret!

I was too young really to see him play for Burnley but I did see him play at the Turf for Portsmouth. Looking at his England stats he only played 3 times and scored two goals - that would have made him a shoe-in today. Scored 118 goals for us in just 223 games (more than one every other game) meaning at the time of a 42 game season he would easilly be a 20 goal plus a season player. What would we have to give for a player of that calibre now?

I saw him play many times, what a great footballer. He was the first of the modern day fleet of foot, mobile and speedy centre forwards, like Aguero today. At that time in the 60s most teams had a big dolloper number 9, who would rough up the defenders. In fact if my memory serves me right when he got his three England caps, scoring his two goals, he was filling in for Spurs' big striker Bobby Smith, who was one of those big immobile centre forwards, but preferred by Walter Winterbottom under instructions from the Southern club hierarchy at the time.

Ray was a smashing player in a smashing team and in an era when players weren't mollycoddled like they are now.
As someone said earlier, he used to chase lost causes and never, ever gave up a chase until the ball had crossed the line, his perseverance led to quite a number of goals with Jimmy Robson benefitting quite a lot.

Unfortunately, Walter Winterbottom had no say in team selection. That didn't change until Ramsey got the job.
