How long can we keep Dwight?

Post by Barrowboy » Mon Apr 20, 2020 2:18 pm

Firstly I can only endorse the positive comments made by others following Dwight's involvement alongside young academy lads here last week.

He appears so grounded and humble ie a perfect Burnley player and role model . So...How long can we hang onto him....2022 or perhaps longer 🙏?...thoughts please UTC.

We can lock him in with Madge! She can share her shoebox, in the cupboard under Holycustard's stairs. Let them out on match days.

Prior to the coronavirus shutdown I didn't see him with us next season, now I think we'll probably get another season out of him before he's off to a top 4 challenger.

How much money are the big clubs going to be able to throw about when football returns to normal?
Much more hopeful also that this has helped us hang on to him longer than we might have done.
I really do hope one of the positive outcomes is that there is some return to sanity at the top level of English football

He's tied down to a long contract, although i know that doesn't guarantee anything in this game,i suspect this will enable us to get 1 more season out of him, selling in the summer,or whenever the next window is wouldn't make either commercial or footballing sense,if he can up his goal scoring stats next term and be bagging 7-10 goals, then the bigger clubs will come calling, that's the one side of his game he needs to improve, but he's still only 20 don't forget.

Finances when this mess is over will dictate transfer policy. We have 3 top price tag players: Pope, Tarks & Dwight. Probably one will have to go, I hope not.

We know we have quite a substantial amount in the bank. Even if the season is postponed, we will still end up getting paid for this season, and we will only pay wages for this season, meaning we loose only ticket money which is surely not a huge issue? We can afford to keep any of them, and I’m sure financially it would be better to keep Dwight as he should be worth a fortune after another season. Having played 3 seasons in the prem with nearly 100 appearances he’ll be worth a fortune.

Tarks is the most likely,he's 27 if he doesn't get a big move this summer when is he going to get the chance again, also he's only got 2 years remaining on his contract,if we wait until he's into his final 12/18 months his value will diminish,if we're going to cash in,he'll be the one to go.

The season could still end up voided, which would cost us ~£50m. Then there's uncertainty about next season. Also need to remember that how it impacts us will also affect others, and the transfer market will change a lot as we come out of this with most players value being slashed. McNeil will likely be our most sellable asset and I think there's much more chance of cashing in on him now than there would have been before this started. The alternative is likely to be going again next season with the same squad we have now, less Bardsley and Hendrick and maybe even Brady. I suppose Bardsley at this stage in his career and with the uncertain financial situation may stay for much less money.

There's a strong chance they'll start breeding.

Best have one of them neutered first to be safe.

Does Dwight have a release clause in his contract?

There are 2 factors in the Dwight decision beyond any fee that is offered for him
- Does he want to leave?
- Do the club feel this is the most opportune time to cash in on the asset that he is.

The former will be how he feels about the opportunities being offered which will include, personal development, playing time, salary and career goals (trophies, international appearances, dream club etc).

The latter will be about the club's financial need based at any given time, the availability of a replacement or opportunity to development of the team and the players performance level and desire to move/stay.

Personally hope the Covid situation means we have a better chance of hanging on to him for two reasons:

- the larger teams will likely have less money in summer as they will be disproportionately impacted by the loss of matchday revenue. We will be unlikely to sell a prize asset on the cheap at a low point in the market (same applies for other players).
- the transfer window will likely be reduced to some extent to reflect the season being extended. That's not to say that deals can't be worked on in advance of the window opening, just that if we want to dig in and keep him, makes it a bit easier.

Overall, I think he is getting guaranteed playing time her aged 20 and will be on a good salary. He'll also be supported through any dips in form. He's a way off being the player we all know he will become just yet - needs to score more goals and be more influential on the game. So think he'll stay one more year, work on these aspects of his game and leave next season to a top 4 club.

After I previous sales which I have commented on before I am more confident that no more players will be sold way below value
Previously this has been the case but now we are an established Premier League team and need to adjust our prices to reflect the true value of our assets

Transfer fees are a subject to fluctuation as much as other assets/commodities. So I am interested as to how you would, as an external observer without intimate knowledge of all aspects that inform the decision making process, ascertain a true value

Agreed, assuming we want to remain an established PL team.

One thing that sets us apart from the likes of Stoke, WBA, etc is that none have really managed to develop top talents capable of demanding significant fee’s (that I can remember). We have three chances in Dwight, Tarky and Pope - English players capable of getting in nearly any top six team, in my opinion - and whilst I’d rather all stayed, if we got decent fee’s for all and reinvested wisely, that could be our chance of staying in the PL for 20 years.

Hope the club are working on that basis and planning properly.

We know he wants to end up at man united, and that may help us as if they don’t want him this year going after Sancho he’ll stay with us and I don’t think he’ll leave for any other team than them.

Man Utd? Why would he take a step down? ;)

Who was sold way below value by choice of the club?
