Thanking the England squad
Tony/Leisure
How difficult would it be for the club to put up a banner saying something like
"The supporters of BFC would like to congratulate the England team on reaching the Euro final".
Im sure some of the wordsmiths on here would put together a better/shorter sentence.
I think it would be good PR for the club and fanbase.
What does the fanbase think?

If Burnley came second in the Premier League would you consider that a success or a failure?

If the league came down to the final day of the season, we had home advantage, the opponents were the only team that could stop us winning it, their best player of the season was out, we had a goal start after 2 minutes then sat back nor have another shot on target all game and didn't win it what would you consider it ?

I propose “ You would’ve won it with Ben Mee! **** you Southgate, you loser”
Re: Thanking the England squad
A massive success given we haven’t won it for 60+ yearsclaretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 15, 2021 9:30 amIf the league came down to the final day of the season, we had home advantage, the opponents were the only team that could stop us winning it, their best player of the season was out, we had a goal start after 2 minutes then sat back nor have another shot on target all game and didn't win it what would you consider it ?

Re: Thanking the England squad
I think that is the point. We were all bitterly disappointed on the day and many feel we could and should have done better. However in the cold light of day looking back there is no doubt that the tournament as a whole was a success and a step forward.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 15, 2021 9:59 amOverall yes, but on that last day there would be disappointment.

Totally agree, before a ball is kicked I imagine 99.9% would take getting to the final. You can't help but feel not much was learnt from the Croatia experience at the World Cup but it is a step forward.Berne Leigh wrote: ↑Thu Jul 15, 2021 10:21 amI think that is the point. Re: Thanking the England squad
The England squad and GS performed well in the Euro's, but it would seem a bit crass to congratulate them for coming 2nd, now if BFC had of had a couple of players involved in the England set-up during the tournament I could understand this sentiment more, but how many other major footballing nations celebrate coming 2nd in the big events, not many or any I'll wager, I can't imagine the Brazilian clubs will be flocking to put up banners for them reaching the Copa America and then narrowly losing to Argentina for example.
Re: Thanking the England squad
Whether other countries do it or not we have a tradition of doing it here. Here’s the Italia 90 squad returning after being knocked out in the semi-finals.

Re: Thanking the England squad
Hmm! maybe that's why we never win anything, we always seem to settle for coming 2nd best and running a good race, whereas other nations have that winning mentality, Italy being a prime example, they didn't play at their best in either the semi-final or indeed final, but they got the job completed, and ultimately that's all that counts, and this winning at all costs mentality may well be the reason they now boost 4 World Cups, and 2 European Championships, as opposed to England's one solitary World Cup triumph.
Re: Thanking the England squad
Or it could be that they were the best team in the tournament.tiger76 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 15, 2021 11:01 amHmm! maybe that's why we never win anything, we always seem to settle for coming 2nd best and running a good race, whereas other nations have that winning mentality, Italy being a prime example, they didn't play at their best in either the semi-final or indeed final, but they got the job completed, and ultimately that's all that counts, and this winning at all costs mentality may well be the reason they now boost 4 World Cups, and 2 European Championships, as opposed to England's one solitary World Cup triumph.
Re: Thanking the England squad
Some really odd opinions.
It’s like us vs Tottenham, League Cup semi final.
Not really a chance at the start of the second leg. Minutes away. Then lost. What failures we were.

Croatia got a heroes welcome when they returned from the 2018 World Cup.

Croatia didn't play 6 out of 7 matches in their National Stadium.
Given the reaction of the players at receiving their Silver medals I don't think they would welcome an open topped bus tour and tea with Boris.

Looks at the fixtures to see which player will get the 'You let your country down' on the Turf first?
Sterling deserves a clap this year, he did well.

Re: Thanking the England squad
Can't imagine many countries giving their players a "heroes return" style celebration after they reached the final and lost in a home tournament.
If they reach the final in Qatar next year then that will be a different matter altogether, win or lose.

Re: Thanking the England squad
I dont see it as a step forward really. ultimately it was yet another tournament when the team failed to win a thing.
easy group, and home matches and still nothing to show for it. However well southgate and his staff have performed in recent years, victory still eludes the team.Next time there will be not just european , but world cup teams to overcome.chances are it will be another 55 years before england get their hands on a trophy.

Scotland played 2/3 of their games at Hampden. The only one they got anything from was away at Wembley.kentonclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jul 15, 2021 11:25 amCroatia didn't play 6 out of 7 matches in their National Stadium.

Re: Thanking the England squad
We finished ahead of the favourites France, the reigning champions Portugal, the world number 1 ranked side Belgium, the previous world cup finalists Croatia, the most succesful international side this century Spain.
Home advantage or not we did pheonomenal.
As for so called home advantage.
1988 Germany - semis
1992 Sweden - semis
1996 England - semis
2000 - Holland & Belgium semis & groups
2004 - Portugal - runners up
2008 Austria & Switzerland - groups & groups
2012 Poland & Ukraine - groups & groups
2016 France - runners up
In fact a host nation has only ever won it three times. And the last was France in 1984 when there were only two groups and prior to that spain and italy in 60s when you only played two games!!!!

There are many Clarets who follow England both home and away, I don't think they will be forgetting England for the next 12 months.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 15, 2021 2:15 pmGet over it now, we can all forget England for 12 months as fun as it was
I was at the final against Italy and counted 5 "Burnley flags" around the stadium.

They couldn’t go any faster in ditching not wearing the losers/runners up medals, so it’s probably best not to remind them of anything, somethings are just best forgotten about, save the Cuban for when we complete the job.

First thought was genuinely what? Then, why?
No, still don’t understand why Burnley would, or we would want them to do such a thing.

I would sooner Burnley FC put in place more signage which strongly spells out the fact that the club does not condone social media abuse of anyone, in relation to race, gender, sexuality and religion.

Shouldn’t just be limited to social media abuse though, any type of abuse in any shape or form shouldn’t be tolerated, you would have thought in this day & age people shouldn’t need telling, thankfully the vast majority of people seem to be decent law abiding folk the 1s that I mix with are anyway.
