First post and Genoa Cricket and Football Club
Long time lurker here, this is my first post. Been watching Burnley for over 40 years and like to visit different football grounds.
Had a holiday touring North West Italy in October and managed to catch a game at Genoa. Great experience.
They are the oldest team in Italy and we're founded as Genoa Cricket and Football Club by the English. Don't know if this is of interest but I made a short video of my visit to Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Posted the link on a Genoa messageboard explaining where I was from and who I supported. Got 700 views over the weekend!
Had replies saying they are fond of England and will follow Burnley from now on!

Re: First post and Genoa Cricket and Football Club
An excellent 1st post JohnC, very informative and I certainly wasn't aware that Genoa were the oldest team in Italy, it shouldn't be a surprise that they were founded as a cricket and football club as most were in the late 19th century, both in Europe and the UK.JohnC wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 4:49 pmLong time lurker here, this is my first post. Cheers. They still use cricket in their name. You can see a number of St George Cross flags in the crowd.

Re: First post and Genoa Cricket and Football Club
Nice video.
If you haven't already read it, I'd recommend William Garbutt: The Father of Italian Football by Paul Edgerton. Great bit of history around Genoa, Italy in the early 20th century and also the man himself (even if he did used to play for Rovers). He's the reason why players in Italy still refer to their manager as 'mister' today.
It's a really good read and probably up your street.

Great video. I have a soft spot for Italian football due to the golazzo show on channel 4 back in the day. I went to watch fiorentina a few years ago score a 3-3 draw with Napoli. As you say great experience. I think Genoa’s stadium is the one that Preston modelled their ground redevelopment on.

Love the video real passion.

Excellent video and some wonderful still images. Genoa, Jack Savoretti's team.

Cheers all, will read up on William Garbutt.
Just to emphasize their fondness for the English this was their 3rd strip last year. Wouldn't be a bad one for England to wear.

I think those flags are actually Genoese, which medieval England essentially stole: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_ ... prov=sfla1 . Very interesting connection though!

Re: First post and Genoa Cricket and Football Club
As a close follower of Sampdoria since 1992, this has made me very jealous indeed!
Re: First post and Genoa Cricket and Football Club
Yes, fantastic experience, lucky to catch a game on as we were only in Genoa one night.
A lot of rivalry between Sampdoria and Genoa as they share the same ground, Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Their big game is the Derby della Lanterna.
I think Sampdoria are hoping to move to a new stadium on the seafront. Seems that Genoa fans are hoping this happens as well!

AC Milan is/was also Milan Football and Cricket club. They were formed by Englishmen in 1899 by Edwards and Kilpin, English ex pats. For many years as many know a Burnley ex-pat was groundsman at the San Siri, cutting the grass often in his Burnley bobble hat (in the forth division days).
Barcelona also had close ties, and Burnley opened the Nou Camp as English champions.
