Watford Refuse to Release Dennis.
BBC Sport website shows Watford have refused to release Emmanuel Dennis to play for Nigeria in the foethcoming ACON. Influential player for them. Why aren't we doing likewise with Maxwel Cornet?

Re: Watford Refuse to Release Dennis.
Apparently Nigeria didn’t request him on time for call up. Make of that what you will.claretfern wrote: ↑Fri Dec 31, 2021 11:14 pmBBC Sport website shows Watford have refused to release Emmanuel Dennis to play for Nigeria in the foethcoming ACON. Re: Watford Refuse to Release Dennis.
I saw Ian Wright making a similar point this week;
imagine if we would have refused to release Nick Pope for the Euros this summer...
I don't see why we should expect anything different for the African cup of nations

Re: Watford Refuse to Release Dennis.
If a club refuses to release a player to the African Nations' Cup (I don't like that silly literal translation - Cup of Nations? What the heck?) then FIFA can and probably will refuse to let him play for the club. If as suggested above Nigeria didn't make a proper request, presumably that puts them in the clear. Besides, if a player is refused permission, he might not be in the best frame of mind to play for his club.claretfern wrote: ↑Fri Dec 31, 2021 11:14 pmBBC Sport website shows Watford have refused to release Emmanuel Dennis to play for Nigeria in the foethcoming ACON. Of course, if the player himself refuses to go, that's probably different. But few players would refuse to go.

Maybe my memory isn’t the best, but I don’t remember the euros being held in January during what is the football season for the majority of the world.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Fri Dec 31, 2021 11:40 pmI saw Ian Wright making a similar point this week;

Africa are the only continent to play their cup not in the summer, and that is up to them, but it should be up to clubs if they want to allow their players to go.
There is no reason why the cup could not he played in the summer months like every other continent. There would be no issues then.

Probably because playing a football tournament during June and July wouldn't be very sensible in large parts of Africathelaughingclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 12:05 amMaybe my memory isn’t the best, but I don’t remember the euros being held in January during what is the football season for the majority of the world.

Re: Watford Refuse to Release Dennis.
This is entirely down to his country requesting his release too late. However if Watford think they have pulled a fast one I’d be waiting to see what the players reaction is to being denied his place at the tournament. I would imagine Nigeria have a decent chance.

Re: Watford Refuse to Release Dennis.
Probably Watford have fell lucky with this. I stand to be corrected but am sure the last few tournaments Nigeria have had major issues with getting players to play for them, often having players leaving mid tournament because of refusal of payments to players and the players actually turning up at hotels and being expected to foot the bills themselves with a promise they would be paid back at a later date. Probably find Dennis didnt even want to go or was looking at a convenient excuse to not attend

I did read that and he had a point until he started saying that racism plays a part in it, I really don’t think that is the case on this oneJohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Fri Dec 31, 2021 11:40 pmI saw Ian Wright making a similar point this week;

Re: Watford Refuse to Release Dennis.
Because it's a ****** trick, we knew Cornet was an international when we signed him, and I'm assuming the lad is proud and wants to go and play for his country. Also I'd like to think we've got a bit more class than Watford.claretfern wrote: ↑Fri Dec 31, 2021 11:14 pmBBC Sport website shows Watford have refused to release Emmanuel Dennis to play for Nigeria in the foethcoming ACON. Refusing to let players represent their county in an international competition is disgraceful. If I was this Dennis fella, I’d refuse to play for Watford now

Watford seem to be within their rights but this stinks of desperation.

Theres ‘within your rights’ and doing the right thing.
When clubs bring in the best players in the world they know the signings are likely to represent their country, the fixtures for international competitions should be on the calendar of every Premier League managers and Clubs CEO’s wall.

From a legal standpoint, Watford appear to be within their rights, however morally it stinks, and I hope it comes back to bite them.evensteadiereddie wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 11:28 amWatford seem to be within their rights but this stinks of desperation.

They have just done right rufusing him permission as they pay his wages. We should do the same with Cornett although I doubt it would be much advantage to us as he is hardly ever fit

Dennis taken off at HT in their game against Spurs, it would be the ultimate irony if he missed a few weeks through injury now wouldn't it.

Re: Watford Refuse to Release Dennis.
Merson on Sky was saying he didn't look injured and was playing ok. Seemed to suggest there may have been issues at HT in the dressing room. Perhaps he isn't best pleased about not being let go? They may have an unhappy player on their hands?

Oh! dear that would be a shame. Can't blame the lad though, a chance to showcase his talents on the international stage, and due to an admin error that's now being denied to him, plus Nigeria would have a fair shout at going deep in the ACON I'd imagine.Somethingfishy wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 5:01 pmMerson on Sky was saying he didn't look injured and was playing ok. Re: Watford Refuse to Release Dennis.
A little bit disappointed, a little bit happy, according to Ranieri:
“The board spoke with the national team of Nigeria, that is it finished. Maybe disappointed, all the players want to go to play for their national team, but also want to stay here – a little bit disappointed, a little bit happy to stay here.”

If you choose to sign overseas players, then you must realise they'll be playing in tournaments. Same for us with Cornet, and plenty of other teams, but I don't see them all making a fuss about it.
Re: Watford Refuse to Release Dennis.
Crazy hope they keep them and drop-I can’t see them finishing above us if they do we deserve to go down.They have some decent players but there not set up right at all
Re: Watford Refuse to Release Dennis.
On a similar note, it will be interesting what happens with Wood with New Zealand's World Cup qualifiers in late March, especially if Burnely is still in relegation danger. Due to FIFA's great scheduling some of the matches fall out of the international window so Burnley will be under no obligation to release him for 2 of the matches.
It seems like a few of the Burnley fans don't want him in the starting 11 anyway, so if NZ can have him in March that would be great thanks!
