Re: Disco train
The whole team travelled down on the train. I was living in London at the time and met the train at Euston to travel to the game with a couple of mates who had travelled down on The League Liner. Think it was either the first or second time that the train had been in operation. I heard that Taffy had been getting a lot of grief (verbals) from a couple of fans. Taffy did split opinions it would be fair to say. One of the fans had been a classmate at junior school.

I went by more modest transport: coach. The one in front got its windws put through by QPR fans after the match. The coach stopped, Burnley fans leapt off and er, apprehended the guilty aggressors. Was anyone on here there that day?

I was also residing in London at the time, in the 3rd year .as a student. Lost 2-0 at QPR, probably our main rivals for promotion at the time. Planned to go to the game with Dave Bedford, the runner. Was in my year and a massive QPR fan. Of course I was excited to be going along with him but at the last minute he went off to Spain for warm weather training.

Re: Disco train
Incredible watching him.run around the track we had with who I considered excellent student runners. Like a metronome, seeing them off one by one with energy to spare. The 72 Olymplcs were a massive disappointment to him only finishing as high as 6th, I think, in the 5,000m and 10,000 m. July 73, though he broke the 10,000m world record. Seemed he could run against the clock better than an opponent.
Can safely say it was and still remains the only time in my.life I've had a world sports Superstar seeking me out later the following week with bragging rights. Especially after I'd told him we would just sweep them away.

Neither link works for me.
Am I just inept, or is there a problem?

Re: Disco train
He finished 6th in the 1971 European Championships, behind a Finn, Russian, East German, Yugoslavian and Spaniard. The Finns were later discovered to have been " blood doping " their athletes by giving them extra blood during competition, and the Eastern bloc countries were known to have been doping their athletes. Given modern standards of detection, who knows where he might have finished ...Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 2:10 pmIncredible watching him.run around the track we had with who I considered excellent student runners. Re: Disco train
Finished 12th and 6th at Munich. The Finnish runner, Lasse Viren was his nemesis as far as medals were concerned. Bedford was very much like Ron Clarke a.decade before him though not in the same class. Both ran better against the clock.
